I thought it was a waste of money. Urine diapers can go in a trash and poop diapers have to go straight outside once solids are introduced anyway. That's been our experience anyway. |
i hated mine and gave it away after about three days. found it really hard to get the diaper in with one hand while i was holding the baby with the other hand on the changing table. much easier to just toss. i just take the garbage out each day...and wrap then in a plastic bag. |
Yes. Just take out the trash daily. |
PP here. I meant ...
Yes, an ordinary pail served us just fine, so in answer to your question... No. Poop is just poop. It isn't toxic and it isn't that big a deal. |
I got a tip on this board when I was asking this question. The poster told me to use leftover grocery bags to put the poopy diaper in and then twist the bag and fold it back over the diaper to "double-bag" it. It's great. I have a diaper champ upstairs which we used more often when the baby was first born, and a Diaper Dekor downstairs that we use more often now. I like the Diaper Dekor better and it looks better, but I think that it's because I am double bagging those diapers and not the ones upstairs. I spray the Diaper Champ with Febreeze Air Deodorizor every couple of days when it starts to smell and it goes away almost instantaneously. My husband prefers the Diaper Champ. I think a lot of it is preference. The diaper pails aren't a whole lot more than the regular garbage cans, so why not use it? I didn't get the Diaper Genie because I knew it would irritate my husband to always buy the bags. He is not cheap but he hates when things have a built-in cost.
They each need to be emptied at about the same time, but since we use the Diaper Dekor more I would say it probably holds more. |
Oh, the other reason I prefer the Diaper Dekor is because the Diaper Champ sometimes gets dirty in the "chute" and that is just gross. |
I had a diaper genie and just wasn't impressed. What I found myself doing was putting a ziplock bag in the trash cans and then putting all of my dirty diapers in it. Once it was full, I took it to the trash. Even if it took a day or so to get full, I didn't find that it smelled and it was definitely easy. |
OP here. To the 20:37 poster, I thought the Dekor used specific bag replacements. Do you use regular plastic bags? And to JamaicaMom, I sent you a private message re picking up your Dekor. Thanks everyone for your feedback. |
I'm impressed by those of you who are emptying your diaper pail every day. We are lazier, which makes the Diaper Genie essential, because it does a great job of stink-containment.
Once your baby's poops get a little more solid, you're supposed to dump the waste in the toilet before you put the diaper wherever you put diapers. |
"I thought it was a waste of money. Urine diapers can go in a trash and poop diapers have to go straight outside once solids are introduced anyway. That's been our experience anyway. "
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS! |
Why waste your money. just toss it in the outside garbage can. One less thing to find a place for when the baby arrives. I use the regular trash for the wet diapers. |
Depends on the situation and layout of the house. Getting used to a new baby that poops eleventy times a day, sorting out the mechanics of the diaper changing routine, etc. the extra step of running to the outside trashcan might be more burdensome than you'd think. The other issue with any of these diaper pails in your child's room though -- once they start crawling you'll probably want them to be able to play pretty freely in their own room. Guess what they'll beeline for? Yuck! We've had to move the pail at 10 months. Also, they all seem to stink whatever the brand, I think it's unavoidable. We tried a strong sanitizing vanilla spray between emptying the pail, the net result being ...... a room that smelled like vanilla poop. Sandwich bagging the poop diaper before tossing it in the pail does help a bit. |
We have the Diaper Genie II - it makes life easier and more pleasant. When we go out places, friends home we by the little individually diaper bags that have a scent to them - you can buy them at Target or Walmart, maybe some of teh baby stores. |
I have a diaper Dekor. I have used it for four and a half years strait, and it still keeps the smells in. My ds is pretty much potty trained, (and no, he isn't four and a half), and it is only used for poopies.
It just isn't possible for us to leave two young children alone while we run down to the trash. We absolutely need the Dekor. |
We had a Diaper Genie (not sure if it was '1' or '2') but it was adequate at best. It actually worked well until she started eating solids. We moved when my daughter was a year old and stopped using it because I couldn't find the refills - bought a trash can with a tight-fitting lid and kept it in a powder room we never used. I thought that worked fine. We know another family that used a trash can similar to ours but kept it out on a balcony they never used. |
