Are diaper-specific pails really necessary?

Child #1: we bought a diaper genie, but I could NEVER figure out the crazy twist bag installation thing so I barely used it.
Child #2: I gave it to my sister for her twins...she had a dog that would TEAR UP any diaper left anywhere remotely accessible. (gross - of course)

For us, any diaper gadget was more trouble than it was worth and an on-going cost to replace the plastic insert bags,, etc. we line a basic small trash can with a grocery bag adn diapers go in there....it is emptied daily. any crazy poopie diapers go right out into the trash.
