You never heard of "John Smith DBA Smith Consulting"? DBAs are real.

You are a fool.

"John Smith DBA Smith Consulting" means John Smith DOING BUSINESS AS Smith Consulting.

I guess there is one born every minute.

They've been in business for decades, and I could never understand it. They have some bogus "accrediting" agency that is approved for the US Dept of Ed that grants them accreditation. Even if they are known to be a rip off, there's not much that can be done to stop these for profit diploma mills since they are protected by politicians. Complete taxpayer rip off.

Re the DBA for real — I’m sure he was joking! Because it was pretty funny

I was a "advisor" there in the late 2000s. It was a job I took from a temp agency after being relocated for DHs job. We landed in a very poor area (DHs employer was like THE only way out of poverty) and UoP really takes advantage of people's desperation. We had quotes and were always outselling. I lasted 5 months. It was like a werid sociological experiment. I could write books on it. It's like everyone there just kept dranking the kool aid and really believed it was an educational institute. The teaching staff was really really fascinating. Like all these people got together and decided to pull a huge fast one on the population at hand. It was terrible. So many of these poor people had NO idea they could be getting a real.degree at the CC for 1/5th of the cost.

I’m in HR. I pass on all applicants with U of Phoenix and similar for profit universities. Waste of Money.

For profit predatory “school” with degrees that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on

The only thing worse than arrogance is arrogance and ignorance:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Business_Administration

The Doctor of Business Administration (abbreviated DBA, D.B.A., DrBA, or Dr.B.A. or BusD) is a research doctorate awarded on the basis of advanced study and research in the field of business administration. The D.B.A. is a terminal degree in business administration. Along with the Ph.D, it represents the highest academic qualification in business administration. Successful completion of a D.B.A. or Ph.D in business administration is required to gain employment as a full-time, tenure-track university professor or postdoctoral researcher in the field. As with other earned research doctorates, individuals with the degree are awarded the academic title doctor, which is often represented via the English honorific "Dr." or the post-nominal letters "D.B.A.", "DBA", "Dr.B.A.", or "DrBA".

You are far better off taking online courses with a real brick and mortar university like the University of Maryland (or any other state university).

They do offer in person classroom instruction, the model is designed for working adults and if you're experienced and just need the piece of paper to check a box, it's not a bad gig. There is learning to be done. It's expensive but so is grad school.

~UOP alum with an MBA from a "real school"

A whole lot of reputable schools offer classes for working adults. UOP isn't alone in that group. It doesn't matter if they offer in-person instruction, they still aren't taken seriously by a lot of employers. If you're going to put in the work, you want to get the most bang for your buck instead of limiting yourself to employers who only care if you checked the box.

I haven't been part of this particular argument on whether or not it's a real doctorate. But do you really think a DBA from University of Phoenix is going to get you a university position, much less a tenure track at one? It is not a reputable school.

I haven't posted on this thread before I posted that. I don't think University of Phoenix is a reputable school at all, but reputable schools (including Harvard) offer DBAs. PPs had been arguing the degree is either real or not respected, so I posted this as a counter-argument.

Anyone know if now and then they recruit decent, if low paid, faculty and the classes are worthwhile?
