| OP here. Thanks for the thoughtful replies. It sounds like 216 may be borderline-in, but be a data point that makes them look closely at teacher recommendation. Our family always does some math enrichment over the summer (just an hour or two of shoring up each week) so I think I may do that, and wait for Fall MAP scores and if they are also high, perhaps petition at that point. Thanks for all the data! |
NP Here, fyi at our ES they switched DC (and a few others) into Compacted math just after Fall 4th grade MAP scores came in. They had listened politely to us, but MAP really helped. |
| My son was recommended for compacted math with a 220 spring score...but he was recommended before those scores came out. |
|
OP, Sounds like subjective measures like teacher observation are used in addition to MAP or other scores. If your school tells you of a specific cut-off regarding the scores needed to get into compacted math, it would be useful to some parents if you could come back and share it here. Thanks! |
| Can people from other elementary schools let me know how compacted math decisions were communicated to them? We have not heard anything here, and my child's MAP scores are very high and she really needs it. |
Maybe two weeks ago I got a note home in my child's backpack. I can't remember if it was in a taped envelope or stapled shut the way progress reports are sometimes. It had two papers. One with his recommendation and one with a form to ask that he be re-evaluated if I disagreed with the decision. He said every child in the class got one. |
Depending on the school. That is the big issue. Not all kids with OP score a get into compact math. They might not have room. |

OP, of your child is 216 by the end of the year and most kids invited into compacted mah are 228 or higher. It’s prety safe to say your kid needs to secure a few additional skills before being invited. Compacted math goes very quickly and you kid should not slow down the rest of the class. Believe it or not there is a huge variance between 216 and 228 or higher.

Thank you. I will contact the school. We've received nothing. |
|
OP here. I just went and checked my older child's MAP score history from myMCPS and she had exactly the same MAP score at the end of third grade but was invited into compact math.
I guess the difference in math placement must be due to teacher recommendation (?) |
I would check in with the teacher to discuss. |
| My DS had a 235 and will be in Compact Math. Will also be in a local CES, but I understand the bar is lower for that. |
Not in my understanding. |
I don't understand how you are not getting this. If they allow a certain number of kids in compacted math based on teacher allocations per grade and how many classes of math they should have, and your oldest was in the middle of the strong kids, she was invited. If your younger one has a stronger grade with higher scores, she is probably below them and didn't make the cut off. Like the pervious teacher said, your child shouldn't slow down the class. This is why I miss tracked math classes for everyone and not this compact math BS. |
Could be, but it could also be the different mix of kids this year, and it could also be directives from the principal or MCPS to only take high scorers compared to previous years. See? |
