Please recommend a bag for a college student

The same LL Bean, Jansport, or North Face backpack they've been carrying?

LL Bean.

Key elements: waterproof, holds thermos/water bottle, space for whatever electronic device(s) student routinely carries around. Comfortably carries a heavy load hands-free. For me, that means backpack not shoulder strap. But some backpacks distribute weight much better than others.

+1. Seem to ditch the LL Bean and Jansport backpack for a North Face

Nothing too expensive. They get stolen all the time.

Really ? Neither of my kids reported backpack theft as an issue. Cell phones, laptops, & bikes seem to be high theft items, but backpacks were not an issue. I guess like most things though, the expensive ones would be a target I guess.

Gross. By college everyone should be past having such low self-esteem that they need to have whatever the masses have.

My kids have the biggest laptop backpack that Eddie Bauer sells. We purchased them 3+ years ago and they are still in great condition. Get a color like black or gray so they don't stand out too much because then they are less likely to get stolen.
