let me correct myself:
Why did you buy a house you can't afford and then have a baby you can't take care of? |
Our in-home daycare in DC was significanlty cheaper than nanny. $325 vs $500/weekly. |
I can't believe I'm even responding to this, but I can afford my house asshole! I can't afford to stay home like many other moms, so that means I'm not supposed to have kids? How could you find it in your heart to be so cruel? |
So she wouldn't have to live next to idiots like you. |
There is a finder/placement service in No. Virginia which I've heard very good things about. The sister in law of a friend has used this service which helped find a provider that they've been with for over 3 years. The provider has cared for two of their children (both from infancy, I am guessing). They love their provider. The service is www.infanttoddler.com |
The DC government keeps a list of all the licensed in-home day care centers. (I assume there's something similar in NOVA.) I know it's not simple to start from scratch this way, but if you're not able to get any specific tips, it might be worth picking up a copy of their list. (When I was looking for care, I had to go pick up the list in person as they don't keep it on line.) I think the number to call is 202/387-0002, which is the Child Care Resource & Referral Service - if that's not the right agency, hopefully they can put you in touch with the right agency. The other thing I learned when I was looking for care is that my federal agency had a contract with a child care referral agency that does a lot of the "leg work" of looking at child care options, which included making the zillions of calls to in-home providers to see which, if any, had spaces near me. I had not known this service was offered before I asked in desparation so it might be worth checking w/your employer or your partner's.
(Sorry that your simple request for help generated such nasty responses. Good luck to you with your return to work!) |
Thank you PPs, your input is MUCH appreciated. I did get a list from the DC agency. They actually will e-mail the list to you (Janet Wood there is very helpful and will e-mail you a list w/in 10 minutes). I have a list of names, but I was wondering if anyone here had any direct experiences (for example, I remember some saying great things about a Miss Bonnie in Capitol Hill). It's a little tough just cold-calling. I just bought my sister a plane ticket to come out for a few weeks so it will give us time to interview some nannies. Thanks again for your input, it has been a tough experience for me and that nasty poster just pushed me over the edge. |
12:50 - you're the sad, and obviously ignorant, one. As a single mother, regardless of the cost of my home or rent, I must work to provide shelter and support for my baby. Count your blessings that you're able to stay home with your child if that is what you choose to do; however, realize that not everyone is so lucky. |
To the mean poster: If you're so anti-daycare, why are you even in the daycare forum? Are you here to give us moms that have to send our kids to daycare and preschool a hard time? |
Hec, I have a 9 month old that I stay at home with, I can watch your little person too!
- in Fairfax |
How about Alicia? She sounds really great.
|
WOW! I'm floored by the cost of Home Day Care in DC. I live in NoVA and have my son in an amazing Montessori based home daycare for $200/wk.
Also, about the judgemental asshole, I feel sorry for his/her kids having to be home with such a wretched person all day...duplicating their DNA and birthing more mentally instable people further soiling the gene pool. |

Op here again. To all the supportive posts, I truly want to thank you. Thanks to the SAHM in Fairfax who offered help, it really makes a new mom (w/ mild ppd) smile to hear such comforting comments. My sister has offered to fly in for a few weeks while my husband and I interview nannies for a nanny share in DC.
In reference to Alicia, she is a real woman, and a very nice one at that. I spoke with her personally and I really want to thank her for her generous support. She may not write perfect English as that is not her primary language, but that shouldn't diminish the fact that she was offering real support. So thanks again! This daycare/starting work experience has took its toll on me. This truly is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. So thanks again for the support fellow moms!!!!! |
Be sure to post again when/if you have any daycare transition issues. Those of us with experience will be here to support and give advice as needed! Pay no mind to the mean ones! |
