| Five to Yale is nuts from a pool of only about 100. Because you know Yale doesn't WANT to admit five kids from the same program, but obviously these kids made it impossible for Yale to reject them. |
| There's a 6th kid from Blair going to Yale, too. And from the regular student body, neither Magnet nor CAP. |
| Speaking of CAP, anyone have the 2018 list for where those seniors are heading? |
Yes, will post |
This is very interesting, because if you were to believe the usual narrative about Blair on this board (from people who've never been there), the general population at the school is just a cesspool of gang members, remedial cases and likely dropouts. My "regular" Blair grad is also going to college next year. Imagine that! |
Congratulations to your kid! I think the only people who post such rubbish are people who don’t have kids at Blair. I know I have posted several times about the good experience my SMAC kid has had in non Magnet classes and how much he loves the school as a whole I think it is also common knowledge that Blair is the toughest DCC school to get into Finally I will point out that it would not be possible for the SMAC kids to have done so well in terms of college admissions (40% headed to a top 25 school) if the non Magnet classes and range of extracurricular activities at Blair wasn’t good. 25% of Magnet students are varsity athletes and many are active in the school newspaper, drama and other Blair clubs |
| Pretty impressive list, but I'm surprised by the lack of small liberal arts colleges. Is that pretty typical for the Blair SMAC program? |
Doesn't surprise me. STEM kids pursuing STEM careers. Will naturally gravitate toward strong tech schools and large research institutions with the firepower to be on the cutting-edge. I would expect the TJ college list to look very similar. I'm sure there's a much stronger representation of LAC's on the RMIB senior destination list. |
Yes. Blair students who want to study college math in particular will not find enough math to last them four years at most SLACs. (Williams is the exception.) |
| Cool, is this the top 10% of the 2,000 kid school then? |
| Cool, is this the top 10% of the 2,000 kid school then? |
It is a math and science Magnet that children from 16 MCPS high school clusters can apply for. They accept 100 students a year so I suppose they represent 15% of Blair’s total student body. They take Math and Science classes as a cohort and take English, social studies, foreign language, electives and of course extra curricular activities with the neighborhood students I would not say they are the top15% of the school because there are plenty of high achieving kids at Blair outside of the Magnet |

This is very impressive. Are these unique accepted (vs offered)? what I am trying to understand is whether 1 kid was offered 1-3 different univ or these are kids who have accepted at the places listed above? |
These are their destinations not overall acceptances, so each is unique (ie, one kid can't go to three places) |
