What bank do you use for checking/savings and why??

Wells Fargo. Why? Well years ago, when we first got married, we combined our funds into the bank that had the best ATM network for us, and it was First Union (presence in DC and Philly).

Through a series of mergers, we ended up with Wells Fargo. It is too hard to change banks, even though Wells Fargo sucks.

Citi. Love it but wouldn’t recommend it as the only branches in dc are in the city.

This.

Same here...First Union, then Wachovia, now WF...everything is set from direct deposit (paychecks) to auto bill pays..but only use for checking. And yes, not a fan of WF.

We have Ally for all our savings...moving money monthly from WF to Ally.

How often do you have to call to cancel credit monitoring "services" or the various other random fees WF loves to charge? Biweekly?

Credit union in the Big Ten town where I attended school. It's about 600 miles from us. Between the deposit-by-photo app and the credit union network of ATMs, proximity to a physical bank has never been an issue. And I have never paid them a fee...for anything.

NP here and also started with First Union a long time ago then Wachovia and now WF. I've actually never been charged a fee by WF in about 20 years. I used to have this great account called a Crown account (free checks, insanely low minimum balance) but they recently kicked me out of that account and into some other (shittier) type of account. Even though this account is better than what they offer to the general public the terms are much less favorable than my old account.

Love our local credit union. They look out for their members, not the corporate bottom line.

Why is PNC suddenly charging you fees, OP?

I have been with them for years and do like them. I do not pay ATM fees, but I really only take out cash once a month. When PNC transferred from Riggs Bank, I was promised no ATM fees ever and I have always been reimbursed if I use a non PNC machine.

The only thing I do not like about PNC is that they call every time you go into a branch to get "feed back." Again, I visit my branch in NW DC rarely but the calls are annoying.

I'm another WF user due to a legacy account. Meridian -> Corestates -> First Union -> Wachovia -> Wells Fargo.

I've been meaning to switch mainly due to their corporate practices, although I personally haven't had any junk fees or other issues.

Never used a bank, I have always used a Credit zunion as an adult. I had a junior account at a savings and loan when I was in middle and high school.

Not the OP

So, have been with Washington first, which got absorbed by Sandy Springs. god awful. which is a shame since i like the folks a the local branch.

Looking at a bit larger of a bank. Kid is going off to college and there is a PNC branch on campus and we have a couple PNC branches near the house Any down sides to PNC?

they have a couple incentives IE free money if you sign up and go direct deposit...

are there any downsides to PNC?
