A good friend of mine has an Audi A5 and has had nothing but problems with it.

It has been wonderful for trips, carpooling, throwing bikes in and so on. I will eventually get another car and I’ve already decided that I will replace this van with another van. However I have no idea when that will occur as my van is already 15 years old and shows no sign of deteriorating.

As much as I am a proponent of minivans, even with a family of 4, I don't think it'd fit OP's purposes of just mostly everyday commuting and occasional outings.

I like my Toyota Highlander with comfortable second row bucket seats. So it has 2+2 for the four of you, plus extra seating in the third row for your kids' friends. It also can fit quite a lot for the occasional Costco or Home Depot run.

We just replaced our 11 year old V50 with an Outback and have a CRV as our second car. Both are great and I would recommend either. The CRV is a similar age as the Volvo, but lower mileage, and hasn't given us any problems. The space on both is a big improvement from the V50. I really like the Outback after driving the V50 -- like being higher up, the drive is smoother, it's just more comfortable overall.
