Assume you are a stay at homer with shit tons of time on your hands. That's not a reality for those of us that work.

And for those of us who put in a lot of time writing a response I don't want to have to keep re-writing my tips/advice when this same question comes up every single week.

DP. Rule #1 in asking for help is "do not insult the people you ask for help."

Without posting your budget, no one can really answer this question for you.

Then don't. DCUM isn't a job or required homework.

OP, choose your budget and commute. Some are better than others, but basically all the schools in NOVA are above average, in spite of the whiners.

It really depends on your budget. If you can afford it N Arlington is a great option with short commute to DC, McLean schools are great, Vienna and some parts if Fairfax, in Fairfax you want to avoid falls church and Fairfax high schools Good luck!

This. You have to work hard to find one that is not good. Sure, they exist. But they are mostly above-average to excellent.

It's more than just this though. Beauty or "good" is in the eyes of the beholder. No one is going to tell OP not to move to their district, so the question is meaningless without more information on what OP is looking for.

Areas around Woodson, Lake Braddock and Robinson would all be in your commute range and there is pretty wide variation in budgets from low 400s for a townhouse to a bunch of SFH in the upper 400-600Ks up to +1 million in a few pockets . Those high schools are good and all the ES in those systems are solid (don't bother with "Great Schools" ranks--they are really distorted--look at the data on the FCPS websites). Lake Braddock and Robinson are both 7-12th secondary schools. Woodson has Frost as a middle school. Commute via 495/395 is about 40-50 min in rush hour of course depending on exact location/time of commute or 40-45 min by express VRE train.

If you can't afford McLean, go with Mantua/ Frost / Woodson

What price range? We could help you find the best area for your budget, but without that info people are suggesting some areas where a single family house will likely cost you $1m. If that suits your budget, you already have some great suggestions.

+1. All depends on your budget, though. We love the Burke area, plus two VRE stations (takes about 40 minutes to get to L'Enfant).

Some of the posters here have just been plain nasty, ignore them.

NP. I'm sorry, but when did it become our job to do your homework for you? After all, this isn't my problem, my kids are already in good Virginia schools.

Not PP but have you actually used the search function? I have a ton of times and it is fine for sorting through to find something on a specific school or random specific topic. But it is terrible to use on a topic that comes up a lot as it gives you every hit in a thread, doesn’t group threads, doesn’t sort by any conceivable way - it is really a pretty bad function and not user friendly at all.
