They went from a 9 to a 5.
I think the current rankings more accurately reflect the quality of that particular school.
Great school is the standard when evaluating real estate..

You're silly.

You don't think people actually weigh GS ratings when shopping for a house, do you? They do not.

Of course many people do. They shouldn't, but they do because it's easier than actually taking the time to look at the underlying data and many people are statistics-illiterate.

Trust me, they do not. It is not a factor.

People who don't know the market probably do use GS, and likely end up missing out or buying a McMansion in Chantilly as they chase those GS scores.

Yeah, I'm zoned for Yorktown and I was thinking I should research other schools given the most recent GS scores. But checking out this raw data, there are a ton of advanced students there. Thanks, OP.

Yorktown is an excellent school. Has some growing pains like the rest of Arlington and some problems related to affluenza. But it's a good school.

Great Schools is an idiotic rating system. It was idiotic when it rated Yorktown a 9 and it's idiotic now.

Keep dreaming. Anyone with half a brain who buys real estate knows that the reputation of the schools affects property values. Like it or not, GS ratings are the easiest, quickest, and most common way to get a quick feel for school quaility - there’s a reason most real estate websites include them. Discerning buyers will look beyond the GS numbers, but many people, especially those needing to quickly relocate in time for a new school year may not look much beyond them.

Home buyers absolutely look at demographics, period.

Of course homebuyers look at GS rating. Delusional to think otherwise.
I’m not bothering to nit pick data and cohort below a 6 or 7.
I’m sure many homebuyers do the same.
As I understand it Yorktown had a bunch of high poverty and minority student zoned out with the last redistricting. So, I’m sure they’ll be back up in another year, and we will all be hearing about great schools being the most reliable source and standard for school quality.

Of course people use GS in real estate searches. And this is the problem with more granular data - it cannot be reduced to a searchable number. I would LOVE to see someone build a better system and knock GS down - I think it is a travesty what the update last year did. But that new system needs to be searchable on maps and able to represent a meaningful singular score. Or it will not displace GS.

Exactly!

And until Redfin and Zillow and all of those real estate apps use a more meaningful data set, GS will continue to be used and continue to be racist and awful.

Hopefully, this thread, for the alternative to great schools gets picked up by google and people start looking at more meaningful data.
