Haha. Norwegian is the cheap airline to get to Norway.

Right. That's why I'm confused why the op can't figure out a way to use the credit. Norwegian must fly into NY, right? So drive up to NYC and use the credit.

This is OP. We actually live in Centeal America. We’d need to take and expensive flight to use our cheap tickets.

How serious is the illness? Is it you, your spouse, or your kids? If not, then why not just go?

We had an elaborate summer plan that included visiting family and then flying from there to vacation. Not sure we’d be able to make it worthwhile to buy five tickets from our home to a city serviced by Norwegian to use the credit. Without three kids, sure we’d do it, but as a family of five it doesn’t seem realistic. Fingers crossed on the chase travel insurance.

Leave the kids behind, use the credit for you and DH.

I managed to get a refund (not credit) from Delta, less the change fees a few weeks ago. I was very surprised.

Call the airline and explain the situation--if your credit card does not cover it.

They might work with you.

Because we will be spending time with the sick family member instead. And we can’t comfortably afford two weeks in Europe. We were supposed to be traveling with the dick family member who was going to be paying for accommodations and food while we were there.

I’ll try this next. Thanks.

We had flights to Costa Rica a couple of years ago and my wife had a car accident and spent two weeks in hospital. Her doctor advised against us traveling a few weeks later in multiple casts and wrote a doctors note. We got a full refund from the airline. It was a Costa Rican airline. It took a few weeks but refunded in full for our non refundable tickets.

Why not scale back the trip then instead of canceling (assuming you can't get a refund or credit)?

OP reporting back. Norwegian refused to work with us at all. It looks like our Chase card will be refunding us.

this is so selfish. Obviously op was not asking about continuing on with the trip. You wouldn’t cancel a trip if is was anyone besides you, your spouse or kids? You can’t fathom anyone else doing so either? WTH?

Great news about Chase being helpful - good to know! Sorry about your canceled trip, OP, but glad it's been resolved financially.

That's exactly why I use the Sapphire Reserve card for all airline tickets- the travel insurance and trip delay benefits essentially get you the same coverage as pais travel insurance.

Really glad to hear they will accept your claim. When you experience something like a bad illness or death in the family its very helpful to know that at least you don't have to add worry about the cost as well.
