I don't think you are overreacting, as a parent you want the best for your children. I will say that I went to private school all my life and it was all kinds of crazy things happening amongst the student body. The kids had drugs, drinking parties( at their parents home, with the parents consent), there was bullying, cursing, etc....These were NOT low-income or(if we're calling a spade a spade) black children.
So with that said, there will be negative exposures anywhere you go. My parents set a solid tone and foundation for us, so we could make wise decisions despite what was going on around us. |
| What school is this? People can tell you whether this was an aberration or typical of you name the school. |
But how about the ADULTS in the school? How would you describe their behavior? |
| You are not overreacting. You are in touch with your honest reaction and should follow your gut instincts. |
+1. I'm on the fence about enrolling our kid at a school meeting this general description tomorrow. |
| OP here - These responses have been just what I needed. I need to trust my instincts and figure out another school option. I don’t want to share the name of the school in case it’s just an aberration but I would encourage you to drop off your paperwork during the school day so you can get a real sense of what’s going on. This wasn’t the first red flag for me with the school but I tried to overlook it. There are some great other elementary options in he neighborhood, guess I better hope those WL #s move! |
| OP, I recently visited a Tier 1 charter EOTR and was pretty horrified. The way the staff spoke to the children and to some of the parents was unacceptable to me. A grandparent came to pick up his child and asked about the police presence outside. He was brusquely informed that it was due to parents getting into fights at pick up time. The look on his face made me feel so sorry for him. No way would I send my child there, and I'm not terribly picky. |
| I put my kids did early elementary in private school. We moved them public when they were old enough to know that this type of behavior is not normal and not part of our value system. But they also have heard their Chevy Chase friend’s parent threaten spanking, which they were horrified by! Beat your ass or do you want a spanking are different sides of same terrible coin. |
Whoops! Clearly had an editing problem in that first sentence. Sorry about that. Should be “ my kids...” |

I wouldn’t be surprised if it were any of the NE/SE schools. I ride the bus and take my kid to our neighborhood playgrounds and hear parents cussing, screaming and threatening kids. I saw a near brawl break out over a kid pushing another child (like 6 y/o kids but the parents got involved). That was at the playground.
I have heard 10 y/o-ish kids threatening to kill each other, n-word, etc. I can’t imagine if everyone turns into angels when the walk into school. |
