If you used to live in NYC or surrounding and relocated somewhere else...

After 9 years in NYC, DC felt like a vacation - much cheaper (I save so much more money in DC), less crowded, less of an exhausting grind, better weather, cleaner, and better for a person's mental health.

+1. I’ve saved a significant amount here and also built a lot of equity. Friends in NY seem to be in the same place. Making a lot but not saving and still renting.

Same. Also returned to DC area (suburbs). Was in NYC for 8 years.

It always feels dirty and exhausting.

Moved for DH's job - 20 years ago. Cost of living is better than surrounding suburbs of NYC. It's not just the cost of housing but the property taxes. Most NYC suburbs are small towns that each have their own police, fire and schools.

a comparable house in scarsdale, will have much higher property taxes than bethesda

The taxes on this home are around $25,000.

Better weather, much more reasonable COL

It's not better weather! It's so much more humid in Broward. It's disgusting there.

PP are you the op? The pp has ever right to state their preference for weather. Was the question tell me where you live so I can mock it? No. It was where did you move after living in NYC and why.

I can't answer the question because I never lived in NYC!

We moved down 7 years ago for DH’s job. It took a while to get used to but we love it. Life is much easier here.

I'd agree with all of this except "better weather." I have a house with a yard in DC, and while a few of my friends in NYC are getting apartments now, the difference between what you can get for your money here and there is nuts.

NOVA for DHs job. Hate it. Moving south in about 2 years and I can’t get there fast enough.

Dallas TX & Naples FL.... at age 32, after 10 yrs in the city, packed up and got outta NYC after completing NYU MBA and never regretted it... lived in Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, London, Hong Kong, Raleigh, Columbus and now TX & FL. QoL is outstanding, value for dollar is unbeatable, can get direct flight to wherever, from AA HQ’d @ DFW, most of the people I know here are from someplace else - with the IT, CPG and Banking biz here, there are boatloads of East Coast transplants here and few if any state they want to go back

DC, for a job. Love it.

DC for a job and cheaper housing.

Be warned, they charge sales tax for newspapers here and they put them in a plastic bag with a receipt. Totally weird.

+ another 1. Few friends own anything and still scramble for less. But it works for them.

DC because of job. Petworth reminds me of Brooklyn

Nova for work. DH & i are both born and raised NYers.

DC- better quality of life, easier (and cheaper!) to raise a family

Rust Belt - cheaper but insular and Republican. Can't wait to leave.
