Those of us who actually have attended and visited Ivies have this perspective. We would almost surely welcome either of these students at our alma maters, but question the motivation behind applying to eight Ivies (and likely Stanford as well) knowing how different they are from one another. There are others who love these stories because they're like Barack Obama getting elected eight times or Oprah getting her eighth Emmy. Such people likely have little or no direct experience with the Ivy League. |

^^^^
Really a kid who's father died at 13 has little to no experience with the Ivy's. Do you even realize how much you sound like you live in a bubble. Maybe they are not such snowflakes that they need some perfect fit. They know they will thrive no matter where they go. |
I've got to say, this thing on DCUM where a kid is obviously ignorant or an attention-seeker if they don't find the perfect "fit" reflects such a privileged mindset. You want the right "fit" for your kid because you've got a robust 529 and an engaged college counselor and two college-educated parents with helpful perspectives and the idea of going to college is an absolute given, so researching the minutiae involved in making it perfect for Larlo becomes the priority. It might be hard to believe, but a lot of kids don't have those resources. Going to college is a much more opaque process for someone who is the first in their family to do so, or an immigrant, or a really bright kid being encouraged by some adults in their life to shoot for the stars and admonished by others not to wast money, and what these kids know they want for sure is opportunity. And everyone, even if you're not a legacy, recognizes that Ivies represent opportunity. So if a kid applies to all 8 Ivies when she would have been a great fit at Brown but based on personality is maybe a less-ideal fit at Harvard, scoffing at them for not knowing that in advance, or for not focusing on "fit" in the application process is just a way of pulling the ladder up one rung further: now it's not impressive to get into all 8 Ivies (spoiler alert: yes it is). Now it's only impressive to know which Ivy would be the ideal setting to polish the uncut diamond that is Larlo's mind, and anyone who takes a broader approach is a plebe. |
| Nice to see a couple kids who set goals and worked towards achieving them. |
1. Those of us who actually have attended and visited Ivies have this perspective. I am sorry to note you went to one or more Ivies. If the schools realize that they utterly failed you in imparting a true education to you they will hang their heads low in shame. 2. We would almost surely welcome either of these students at our alma maters Just because you studied there doesn't mean you or your parents own those schools for you to "almost surely welcome". Note the word "almost"! Not certain yet as of posting her/his comment. 3. Barack Obama getting elected eight times Now you demonstrate you just don't know presidential term limits, demonstrating failure of the Ivy you studied at. The use of word "like" doesn't excuse you from "getting elected eight times". 4. Such people likely have little or no direct experience with the Ivy League. If statement #4 is true, you can understand if they don't have the perspective you gained from attending an Ivy. If you watched the video in the link about the NJ girl and have a minimal level of commonsense that she might not have the means to go visit the schools before she applied to. Please give us the pleasure of knowing the ivy/ivies you attended so that we will know they are different from other ivies (as you and some others keep harping how each ivy is different from other ivies). |
Here’s an Ivy-like word for you: logorrhea. It’s not an STD, which you of course may also have, but it describes your behavior here. |
I think the list making PP is the legal secretary who attended CC |
My issue isn't necessarily with the spamming of applications, it is the follow up of reporting the "wonderful news" to the media. And then everyone fawning all over the news. Just stop. Yes, it is an achievement. Yes, some applicants don't really understand the process and over-apply. But really, why does the end result need to be trumpeted?

In case you don't read certain threads, many well to do parents come on here on to this anonymous board to announce their snowflake DCs' college acceptances with pride without anyone prodding them to do. You and I don't know if the NJ girl or her mom actually contacted the media. It could be the school or anyone else. The real issue that is so heart burning for some people is that a minority kid got accepted full ride to all the ivies whereas in spite of all the advantages their DCs may not have the privilege of studying at an ivy. Do you take mortgage interest deduction for your home? The NJ kid's mom may not be taking one after all as she may be living in a rental home or if she does it will be only a fraction of your deduction. |

It makes sense to apply to all these top schools from a financial aid standpoint, too
"Fit" is for people of means, others will thankfully follow the money |

To the person who speculated I may have STD - Granted this is an anonymous forum, but I never thought a person with formal education (paper degree/s) would stoop so low. Please show all your responses on this thread to your spouse and DCs and just see what their reaction will be.
To the person who called me a personal secretary and that I went to a CC - you are giving me too much credit! I hope you both had it to your hearts' content with your intelligent and highly educated (!) responses. |
| ^^^ Legal secretary (correction). |
You sound a bit deranged comparing a post on an anonymous message board to a child and/or parent reaching out to the media and sitting for an interview to brag about their accomplishment. And nobody but the child or parent could have lawfully shared that information. |
I would have wholeheartedly agreed with your post if it were written in 1980 but nowadays we have this thing called the internet. Anybody who is bright enough to be admitted to all eight ivies (quite an accomplishment) is bright enough to do basic research on the colleges to which they are applying. No need for a legacy parent, just an internet connection......do you see how that works in 2018? |
| I think it’s just a sad commentary on what our educational system in the US has become. So few kids able to get in to top universities and then a whole slew who get into 8 at once? It’s not even rational. There are either not enough great universities, or the educational system is failing to identify the true best and brightest. |
