+1 If you pay the difference, don't do it for the prestige. Georgetown is not that big of a deal outside of DC. |
I think there is a bit of GU hate on this board. Georgetown is certainly well regarded across the country and having lived in different parts of the country I would confidently say that it is held in higher regard than UVA. But for me personally it wouldn't be worth the cost premium but I have no idea where your child's interests lie.....which I would hope would factor into the equation. |
Sorry to blow your bubble but most outside DC will not know the nuanced difference among many schools in that area - except possibly JHU and Naval Academy - both in Maryland. |
| UVA instate - save money for grad school |
| UVA. This is an easy decision. It’s become an extremely popular, highly coveted school. Georgetown is a fading, overly expensive, and overrated school. A no brainer, really. |
plans change, you bank the prestige NOW
|
bullshit. it's extremely popular with smart rich kids who can't get into Ivies |
Georgetown has no cache here in Chicago |
|
Can you afford it? Georgetown.
Massive loans? UVA. —Georgetown graduate still paying off loans |

As a parent now I'd prefer my kids to attend Georgetown over UVA. Also growing up in New England, Georgetown was very prestigious, UVA less so.
It is certainly a known quantity outside of this area, without doubt. |
| Georgetown is not worth the money. Take it from an alumnus. UVA has an amazing reputation. |
Disagree. |
What about cachet? |
| What major, OP? |

If it’s for the SFS, yes. Otherwise, probably not. I directly credit doing well at Georgetown SFS and developing connections there for getting my dream job, and succeeding at it. If you want a government job, there are few places that prepare you better.
