Do I need to take the dog out more?

But she works form home and her dog chews things. She would need to focus on her dog too much. I think she is doing more than enough for the dog while working full time.

Then the dog needs to be trained. A dog should not be in the crate that long if there is a person in the house. Train the dog and eventually it will do its own thing.

Stuff kongs ahead of time for your dog to chew on out of the crate a couple times a day. A lab needs to chew and expore, work for his food. At that age my dog only got kibble out of kongs or other toys made for stuffing dog food. The Kong wobbler is great too. Every time you dump food in the puppy's dish is a waste of an opportunity to tire the puppy out, working for his food. I stuff kibble, plain yogurt, applesauce, etc. and freeze the kongs.

Some crate time during the day is good, we use a crate regularly especially with young puppies. Are you also using the crate at night? I would cut back slowly on the daytime use. Confine your puppy to areas that he won't get into anything he shouldn't. Have a variety of chew toys, bully sticks, balls, etc. in his confined area.

He could become a great companion for you as he gets older and calmer. I didn't want a dog the first time around either. She was a lab/retriever mix and around 2 years old I really appreciated her company. It's worth the work while they're puppies!

pp here. Are you training with a class or at least working on behaviour? I hope you're also socializing your puppy with many other dogs and people. Puppies need to be introduced to different noises and so many things so they aren't anxious with new things.

Ian Dunbar's website and books are great! Dogstardaily.com and "After You Get Your Puppy"

She is working from home. Just imagine it as if she is working at an office somewhere outside the house.

Why is your dog in a crate all day long? What reason is there for crate all day long while you are home? It is cruel and insane.

My dog is not in a crate at all, I am away from home almost all day. There is not reason to use crates other than pathetic excuse to avoid training your dog.

I thnk the dogs gets enough exercise but is probably very sad to be in the crate while you are at home. Its cruel.
Its one thing to be in a crate in a quiet house, but the dog can hear you and knows you are keeping him locked up.
Can he go to doggy daycare a couple of days a week?

Because it's a puppy. Until the dog is reliable, it's cruel to let the dog loose in the house, to eat furniture and get in trouble.

Dogs like to be with their people. Keeping the dog in the crate while home is totally different than while away. My dog doesn't need to be crated anymore but when I'm not home she goes by herself into the crate and spends most of the time there. She's not eager for company when no one is there, she gets it. A dog kept in a crate constantly while their human is home is going to feel like they are being punished.

Exactly! op, to answer your question - You don't need to take the dog out for walks more, but you need to keep him out of his crate more. There are many ways to keep him from getting into trouble without a crate most of the day. I believe in crates, but not this much.

Get an ex pen. Put the crate inside with the door opened (to the crate). The dog may feel safe in there but allow it to go in as it wishes. It can roam around in the ex pen otherwise.

Our dog does not live in her crate. It is there for her to use when she wants to get away from everyone. If the girls have a friend over who is wild, if we're having a party and there are a lot of people, etc.

Our dog is out all the time. She has a bed in her crate, we have a bed in the living room for her, and another in the office. We keep a basket filled with her toys in the office. OP, you do not mention if you have dog toys. When our dog was a puppy, she was heavily supervised. Any time she went to chew something she shouldn't, she was told "No," it was taken away from her, and she was given one of her toys with a treat. When she licked or played with her toy, she was told "Good girl!" Thus she learned to go for her toys.

I don't think you're letting your dog socialize enough. Dogs like to be with their families. If you put in the effort to train your dog, she'll be fun to keep you company.

Why is the dog locked in a crate all day? If you're going to get a dog, then train it so it can be in the house, especially while someone is at home all day.
