I would say yes, but especially if a student applies early to one. Williams will be an especially tough putt, regardless, and Bowdoin has become much toughter. Regular round becomes a real crapshoot, especially at Wash U, Bowdoin and Tufts. |
| If the student's stats are at 75% or better of the school's mid 50% range, then I would suggest Emory, Vanderbilt, Rice, CMU, WashU, USC. Apply Early Decision though to increase your chances |
Agree that this is a good list for high stats kids, but note that it's essential to show interest at Emory and WashU. Both practice yield protection. |
| VA residents may have better luck getting into Michigan and Berkeley than UVA. |
LOL. No. Not even close. |
Actually I know quite a few in-state residents who were waitlisted at UVA but got into Michigan. One had even flown up to Michigan when she got the news she was off the UVA waitlist. She turned around and drove to UVA. |
My high stats niece and nephew that live in CA didn’t get into Berkley, but they did get into UVA...and my high stats nieces here in VA both ended up being denied at UVA and yet they made it into Berkley. This was all within the past 5 years. It was funny how the kids all switched coasts every August. What a messed up system. |
Schools need OOS kids money. It’s always about money. |
What a rip off! |
| Has Elon become that hard to get into? |
| My kid fits this profile generally. A lot depends (obviously) on the kind of school your kid is looking for. Places we both loved that seemed reasonably within reach included Bates, Hamilton, and Grinnell. |
This is a good list. Might add NYU, Carleton, Kenyon, Grinnell, Hamilton, William and Mary. Better-ranked schools are super-tough, but the "normal excellent" student has a decent shot at one or two in the ED rounds. Really not worth wasting those bullets on Ivies, etc. unless your kid is hooked or a superstar. |

Seems like a lot of "normal excellent" students didn't get into Northeastern this year, though you would have thought they'd have a very strong chance in previous years. They had a huge increase in applications.
I think all the schools mentioned are definitely on the table for a "normal excellent" student, but none of them are anywhere near slam dunks. They seem like good matches or low reaches, but with the large increase in applications to most of the more competitive colleges this year, I think a lot of matches have become low reaches. You want to be sure to have real safeties (not just based on previous years' Naviance) that your kid will be happy with, as well as apparent matches and low and high reaches. |
I’d add Lehigh, Bucknell, Lafayette and Union. |
Not so much that, more that these "normal excellent" students I know didn't get into any of their top choices. Given the choice between the schools they did get into (at full price) and Elon, they picked Elon. |
