But why does she have to do a sport? Some kids NEVER do organized sports and they're perfectly fine.

I was just going to say this. My non-athletic kids have found team experiences within Model UN, drama productions, Scholastic Bowl, etc.

OP here. Thanks for all the great suggestions! As to why a sport, that was her request. But I absolutely agree it doesn't need to be a sport to get a team feeling. And I think her interests in sports tend toward the individual ones like climbing. We're in MoCo if anyone has any particular location recommendations for any of their suggestions. Also, are the cross country teams in MCPS middle schools competitive to get on? In my day anyone could participate. Thanks!

Cross country is generally no cut, but practice begins in August before school starts. Eighth graders train with the HS team, I think.

You need to work it out before making summer vacation plans.

Spring track is forming right now.

This. My son started rowing in 6th grade and likes it a lot.

Where is crew offered for a sixth grader?

Squash? Any area squash clinics for kids?

Our FCPS high school doesn't have rowing. I so wish it did. My son would love it.

Has she considered band? My daughter has been in band since 7th when she started middle school, she's now in 9th and is in marching and symphonic. It's been an amazing experience for her, she learned to sight read before the? end of her 1st semester of 7th, and is now the best sight reader that they have, she can also play by ear, she learns teamwork, how to take charge when needed, hand/eye coordination, gets to go on band trips if she wants, rides the bus to all of the away games so she gets extra time with her friends, and she absolutely loves it. She has so much fun that my 6th grader has decided to join the band next year when he starts middle school.

Dd had several non sporty friends who made the field hockey team freshman year at our FCPS HS without ever playing before. There are youth leagues in the area too.

Really? I thought Field Hockey was one of the more popular sports for girls.

What is poms?
I'm guessing you're not from around here.

In Nova they're just referred to as Dance Teams. Pom is one style of dance that they do.
