Met Somebody in Another Country

However, it doesn't seem that different than avoiding a US citizen gold digger in DC that wants my money. In both cases, I would have to make an honest evaluation of a person's intentions and trust their character. I'm the one that engaged and pursued initially, so I would like to think things started off innocently. Marriage is way, way far off -- I'm mostly interested to hear how people dealt with the logistics and courtship stage.

If you have money you can meet in the middle or in Argentina every couple of months for a long weekend, plan vacations together, etc. there should be the goal of moving closer at some point otherwise there is not point. I had this. Lots of phone calls, Skype, emails, etc. I was in Italy he was in California. I moved to the US for school to be with him and after one year the relationship ended. I ended up staying and currently working here married to a non- American. I come from a wealthy family and I could not have cared less about a visa.

Why would you waste your time on this? You're telling me that of hundreds of thousands of people that are likely in your age group in this area none of them will work out so you're pursuing someone 12 hours away?

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Either that (desperate) or the OP has watched WAAAAAAAAAAY too many happily-ever-after Disney movies and thinks that love conquers everything, even a 12 hour flight distance.

Wow, the bitter cat lady filter has failed again.

Oh that filter is still up and running fine no bitter cat lady's coming at the OP. I think you're talking about the "please-don't-smack-me-with-reality" filter - yeah that one might be broken cause folks are able to give the OP the painful truth that he doesn't want to hear.

Not everyone wants to live in the US. Why does everyone assume this?

Because a hell of a lot of people do want to live in the US and those of us who have traveled extensively in places like - for me, China, Vietnam, Thailand, India - getting hit up for visas left, right, and center leaves us a bit, ughh, jaded.

Can someone please tell me what a visa sponsorship letter is and if that is something that we do in the US. When I lived in China people were forever asking me to write them a visa sponsorship letter that they would then take to the consulate. Does that mean anything to the consular officers? Did people think I was going to put myself on the hook financially/legally to get them to the US or ensure they returned to China? I never figured that one out.

This. Life is fine in Argentina. They're happy there. The OP never said the fling was a woman, btw.

Why is it that people always knee-jerk into visa plots?

As a foreigner on a non-immigrant visa, I take exception to that reaction. The world is not all hankering to live permanently in the USA, for goodness' sakes.

Millions risk their lives crossing the desert or in little boats to get here, so yes, many do have a hankering to live in the USA.

I have a good friend who is Chinese and here on a non-immigrant visa. She has warned me several times about the bad intentions of foreign women. I figure she should know.

You're an idiot. One single "Chinese" friend of yours does NOT represent the >1 billions chinese people.

I am a US citizen and I met my wife in china during a company trip there. My salary at the time was 150k/year. Her family networth is about 200M, totally dwarfed mine. I married her a year later and she came to the US with me and we're happily married for the past ten years. Btw, her parents bought us a 4M homes in Mclean with a couple of Benz as a wedding gift.
