What do you think happened with Johnny and Baby?

Baby went to Sarah Lawrence, had a brief lesbian affair, then married a nice Jewish dentist and settled in Westchester. She became dissatisfied in the early 70s and she and her husband went to key parties. After her one daughter started high school (boarding school) she divorced the dentist, moved to Manhattan, and went to Columbia for women's studies. She encountered Johnny in the Village one day. He was working as a dance instructor and had recently gotten hired by Bob Fosse as an assistant choreographer for A Chorus Line. They have a brief torrid affair but then agree to be just fond friends.

Baby was dissatisfied with her nose and had plastic surgery. Johnny didn’t even recognize her as the woman he fell in love with and they drifted apart

I assumed everyone in the world assumed what I did- they broke up and went on with life. They had different trajectories. They would never be an actual couple.

Oh wait I just asked dh and he said (after first saying ‘wtf are baby and johnny’) “oooohhhhhh.... they broke up but then Johnny pined for her, moved to her hometown and they got back together forever. The end.”

Wtf?

They went their separate ways. Baby went home with her parents and started college in the fall. Johnny continued to work as a dance instructor.

Baby enjoyed being in college, she did well academically, she had fun going out with her friends and socializing, meeting guys. But she couldn't help but compare every guy she met to Johnny. She wrote a couple of letters to Johnny to give him her address at college and to let him know how much he meant to her but Johnny never wrote her back. Baby assumed that Johnny had forgotten about her. Maybe she wasn't as special to him as he had been to her. After graduation Baby married a nice fellow named Stuart. She wasn't passionately in love with him but she had a lot in common with him, he had a similar childhood background, they were compatible together and they had their parents' blessings to marry.

Johnny continued on with his work as an underpaid dance instructor/performer. The female clients loved him and hit on him regularly. Baby remained in Johnny's heart and on his mind but he didn't dare try to contact Baby at her parents' house. Johnny knew that her parents would not have approved of their continued correspondence. So he waited for Baby to mail him a letter with her new college address like she had promised she would do. As soon as he got her letter and that address he planned to go and visit her at school. He was heartbroken when her letter never arrived. Maybe what he had with Baby was just a summer fling? Maybe she had gone off to college and forgotten all about him?. Eventually Johnny got involved with a regular client - an attractive, wealthy, older woman, Julia, who he had been giving dance lessons to for awhile. Julia was obsessed with Johnny, could not get enough of him and she promised to set Johnny up with his very own dance studio once he married her. Johnny was a bit taken aback by her offer but after some good times together, he agreed to marry Julia.

A few years later, Johnny's dance studio was huge success. He had more clients than he could possibly handle alone - he had to hire instructors to help out. Business was thriving and Johnny had dreams of opening more studios...

Johnny and Julia flew together to attend an investors' conference to talk to people who might be interested in investing money in the studios. Johnny found this part quite boring - he would much rather be in the studio dancing than talking to suits about investment matters. As Julia talked to an interested investor, Johnny's eyes drifted across the crowded room and all the unfamiliar faces....when suddenly his eyes fixed on something across the room. Johnny's jaw dropped open, his heart skipped a beat.. And just then, the woman who had caught his attention looked his way and her eyes locked on his eyes - Instant Sparks. Electricity in the air.

Johnny and Baby began making their way towards each other, as if pulled by a magnetic force....

For the win.

Baby went off to school, started going by "Fran," and eventually ended up making conceptual art. Johnny was her "rough around the edges" bad-boy paramour who went over like caviar with rich patrons and museum directors.

I prefer the version where, after the summer, she went off to college and he joined the local painters and plasterers union and started working with his father, saving money along the way, and still finding ways to dance. The two kept in contact throughout her college years, and when the time came for her to join the Peace Corp, he went with her. They came back to his nest egg and lived happily ever after.
