Why didn't the Democrats pass gun control legislation when they had a super-majority?

OP asked a good question. Same could be asked about immigration. These issues really aren’t priorities for Dems. Otherwise, there would have been action. Dems use them as wedge issues.

Ok, you want priorities? In 2009-10, healthcare reform IS a higher priority than gun violence. Healthcare saved many more people than died from guns. In 2009-10, the financial crisis Republicans created IS a higher priority than gun safety. More people would die from a financial collapse than from gun violence.

So yeah, Democrats spent all their political capital and time getting those items passed. Does that mean gun safety isn’t a priority? nope.

We are coming for you now. I hope the rest of your cowardly life is miserable and short.

Good post.

It’s hard to clean up ALL of the R messes in such a short time.

under Bill Clinton but it was allowed to expire under Bush in 2004. By that time the NRA was buying off politicians. I wish the next crazy with a gun would raid NRA headquarters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban

Interestingly, things are even more messed up now than that now than they were in 2004, given Russia funneled millions into politics via the NRA.

This. No one answered the first question in the thread, but the actual supermajority was only a few months long due to the 7-month delay seating Franken after the recount, the illnesses of Byrd and Kennedy, and Kennedy’s death. It was nowhere close to two years. And even two years would be nowhere close to enough time to fix everything the Republicans did wrong from 1981 onward.

So many excuses in this thread. It's obvious that gun control and immigration were simply not a priority for the Democrats.

The continued hypocrisy is astounding.

It was only for two years. We had passed the ACA and the stimulus. I wish we had passed unbelievably strict gun control and weapons bans. It is heartbreaking to think of the lives that would have been saved.

At least you got Obamacare, or what’s left of it.

I think you're saying that only DS will ever care about gun control. That no Rs will ever vote for gun control.

I'm so sad today.

It's obvious that reality and reading comprehension are simply not priorities for you.

Not to mention you are blaming the Democrats for the sole reason of deflecting away from the Republicans, who are actually the ones responsible for our gun violence problem.

If only Obama had taken all our guns.

Please, Obama, come take all our guns!

That's right. R's will continue to do what they've done.

Reverse rules keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, refuse to provide any care for the mentally ill, fight and push back against background checks and rules to limit sales of high capacity magazines and military-grade weaponry, et cetera. Exactly the stuff that keeps enabling these sicko child-killer school shooters. The worst anyone can accuse the Dems of is being ineffectual. The Republicans, on the other hand, are active and fully complicit enablers of mass murder.

Ok, so in the 18 months Democrats had a supermajority, apparently they SHOULD HAVE

saved the economy that Republicans destroyed
saved the healthcare system
solved immigration
solved gun violence

In a year, Republicans did what?

They passed a ruinous tax cut that will lead to another crisis for Democrats waste valuable time fixing once they have power.

Is there maybe a double standard here?

This. And they only had a "super majority" for several months. Plenty of sources out there that dispels the myth that they someone had control of the government for some longer period of time.

You be sad, I’m going straight for mad. I am doing whatever I can to drive those @&$&ers out of office and take their guns. Yes, I said it: I want to take your guns away. You right wingers have proven yourselves too irresponsible to have them. At the very least, if I have my way, you’re going to have to pass “extreme vetting” before you can get a gun, and have to continually convince the rest of us that you deserve the privilege.

It wasn’t for anywhere near two years, but otherwise I agree with you. It’s not like the Republicans could have obstructed harder from 2011-2016 if the Democrats had passed more things during that time that they didn’t like.
