does baby need tylenol before circumcision/bris?

Anonymous
Our mohel recommended but said it wasn't necessary. The pediatrician said baby was too young for Tylenol. Mohel used wine and numbing cream. Baby didn't cry much.

We were instructed to give it afterwards, as it has a calming affect on babies and little ones. Either it worked, or he just wasn’t that phased by the whole thing, since he calmed right down about 20 minutes after the dose.

Also had lidocaine cream beforehand, and the wine.

Per our mohels rec, we gave 1 ml an hour before

We gave it before, per mohel's instructions. Baby also got wine, and a ring block (numbing shot in the base of the penis). I was so nervous! It turned out ok.

We did it before and lidocaine.

But hey, have a little bit of Tylenol before we hack off some of your body.

What's the wine for?

I would go with the tylenol and skip the wine.

They don’t drink wine they suck on a wine soaked cloth- it’s kosher wine - sweet and not that much alcohol- it’s tradition

It's tradition, but also for pain relief. In the hospital circumcision, they do the same thing, but with sugar water.

After seeing how much wine the baby got (the mohel was pretty liberal with that!) in retrospect I would have done ibuprofen instead or skipped the wine.

You cannot give ibuprophen to babies under 2 mos. only Tylenol.

wait, so are you saying you did NOT give it in the end?

We did not end up giving it before. We did give a half dose afterwards. Like PP's, DS got numbing cream as well as (I think) lidocaine.

I would just wait and see how he does. If he is fussy afterwards, you can give it to him then. He may just sleep like mine did.

Nothing demonstrates parental love and respect for a child's individual worth than mutilating their genitals.
