The parent lamented that the PG county schools are too black and they wanted diversity for their child. The kid was transferred to a DC school. Why is anyone surprised that many county privates are majority black? We are a majority black county!!! We are also the wealthiest black county in the country! We need to take pride in that! You think those white folks in DC private schools really give a damn about the fact that there are only 25 black kids in their 400 student school?! They don't. And the ones who are there have to worry about being called the N-word or singled out as a kid on financial aid (when the truth is that most of the aid goes to white kids- but thats for another thread). Yet black folks wanna run to DC privates as if having mostly black children in a PG county classroom is so horrible. Some argue the kids arent as smart. Thats a lie. And it isnt the kids. It's the parents. If you worked with your kids more in math or whatever subject, they would be better at it. But no, youre waiting for the teachers to turn your kids into Einstein. You then you move your kid from the PG Private because you want him to be more advanced in, lets say, math. Assuming your kid is actually more advanced in math than his classmates, why not speak to the teacher about differentation? Ask that your kid be given more advanced math work if he is ahead of his peers. Especially if the school is otherwise a great school. This keeps the bright kids in the classroom. Iron sharpens iron. White folks got it right. Keep your children in classrooms with kids who look like them and share your values, norms and mores. Black folks in Prince Georges have plenty of money. Keep it here. Stop running off to DC privates. Signed, Reformed Former DC Private Parent

Perhaps the real question is why a wealthy black majority county has such low performing, with a few exceptions, public schools? Wealthy and UMC parents are usually more involved/invested in their child's education/schools. For the most part that is not evident in PG county public schools. Parents, whether black or white, need to look out for the best interests of their children and therefore make school choices accordingly.

They have such low performing schools because all the upper/middle class folks take their kids out of the school system and choose private schools. This is the SAME thing that white people have done for decades, except whites normally leave the area altogether. But the black upper echelon of PG county don't have the same resources and ability to move wherever they want without suffering racial discrimination, isolation, real estate "steering," white flight, etc. So they stay in the county, but dis-invest in their own schools. Its an unfortunate state of affairs...

Bingo. PGC has a strong private school culture especially bc private schools aren't really that expensive.

Furthermore there were 100 yes 100 Black boarding schools across the US now there are only 3. Wealthy Blacks are more worried about White acceptance instead of true equality. For all of the wealthy Blacks in places like D.C. Where are the elite Black American private schools and programs? As for PG county I feel great TAG programs like Glenarden Woods & Heather Hills are a source of great pride as well as HS programs like the Health & Science one at PG community college as well as the S&T programs at Rose, Flowers & Oxon Hill. Our school system is in the top 25 population wise and is close to 70 percent Black with a 81+ percent graduation rate. D.C. Would kill to have numbers with the same demographics.

I would pull my black kid out of a school to get away from you, lady. But you do you.

Huh? Let me guess to enroll them in an all White school? Lol. Sorry if I don't subscribe to the racist notion that my child can only learn if beside a White child. Sorry if I don't view my race as inferior like you do.

I agree that there is much to be proud of if your child is a high achieving black student in a PG school, but your idea that the nW privates are all white is not true. In fact the reason we choose our DC private is so my son could have a community of black achievers. We are in MCPs and there are very few black males on their gifted/magnet programs I imagine this might not be true in PG. we are happy with our choice

How many parents have you spoken too , regarding private schools in DC. You have alot of assumptions. Take the time and tour these schools and see what they have to offer.

My child is at a top 3 NW private and outside of the athletes there isn't many non-diplomatic kids of color.
