2018 Kia Sorento

Anonymous
We drive a 2015 Sorento, LOVE IT, never had a single problem. It was much much much cheaper than a Honda Pilot or a Toyota Highlander, and i don’t even know the difference.

We researched the crap out of the pilot, Highlander, and Santa Fe and felt the Sorento was the best.

It’s true that kias were garbage at one time, but they have gotten so much better in the last 5-6 Years.

I’d consider getting a 2 year old one though, depreciation on them is way steeper than Honda or Toyota. We bought ours used this year and paid $16k, previous owners paid about $30k.

You should be able to get a 2016 Sorento for $16-20k.

I'm a PP. You paid $16k for a used Kia? Just because it was bought new for $30k (!!!!) doesn't mean it's a great car or a great deal. Why do you think they are selling it?

Do you know anything about what a Kia Sorento even is? It’s a midsize SUV with third row seating and can seat 7 adults. It has 4 wheel drive and a v6 engine plus a 100k mile warranty. Please, by all means show me a better alternative at that price point. A 2010 Honda Pilot with 100k miles on it?

Of course I know what it is. I used to have a Kia, as I posted previously. You do what you want, but I would never pay what you did for a used Kia. I'm not doing comparison shopping for you. I'm saying based on my previous Kia ownership, I would NEVER buy a used one, and NEVER for that money. I could barely sell the one I bought new.

The PP who received a pen from Kia....

Lol!!

Kias may or may not have improved over the years, only time will tell if this proves to be the case.

But as of right now, they are at the bottom rung of car brands.

Sure, we ALL know Saturn left our planet in ‘09, but it was a subsidiary of Chrysler@.
Just like Mercury folded in late ‘10, but is basically a Ford.

I would rather have a used Honda than a sparkling new Kia ANYthing.
Really.

Their interior looks cheap, they have zero track record on their reliability plus they do not hold much re-sale value.

They basically scream to the other drivers on the road, “Hey Everybody! I wish I could afford an Accord or a Camry, which I do hope for one day! So until then, I am driving this pseudo-fancy looking car to feel like I am cool even though I am barely there!”

Bought 2016 Sorento. Great car, no problems. In terms of luxury, much more offered for the price than Honda or Toyota. Yes, I know, Honda and Toyota have better resale, but the difference is negligible and who buys a car for that reason. Just test drive the Sorento and you will see how nice.

I also find the criticism here highly suspect. Kia sent a pen in response to an owner's letter of complaint? Right. "My mechanic says Kia is junk." Really? Who's bringing their late model Kia Sorento with a 10-year warranty to the local mechanic? Won't even bother responding to the troll who thinks Kia owners can't afford the Toyota or Honda.

Saturn was GM not Chrysler

Your used one does not have a 100k warranty, that's for the first owner only. There is no way they paid $30k new. The MSRP is $30k but even one with a $30k sticker can be bought for $23k right now.

I love the people using "Kia" and "luxury" in the same sentence

We had a Kia minivan about 16 years ago and drove it for five years. Never had a single problem with it.

We have a 2011 Sorento and it's been great--in 6 years, never a single problem. So glad we didn't pay more for a Honda or Toyota.

Because you always get what you pay for.

Ask a mechanic what he thinks of KIA vehicles vs. Honda & Toyota vehicles to get an accurate opinion from someone w/experience.

I’m sure a mechanic wouldn’t say it wasn’t a bad car.

A good one would

I think I'm a pretty good mechanic. ASE seems to think so, anyway.

I like the Kias and Hyundais. No issues with either of them. And the reality of manufacturing today, is that all automakers use essentially the same design process, engineering, technology, and facilities, so basically all cars are about at the same standard. This isn't like the automotive industry of the 80's, where some companies were more advanced than others. It's all pretty similar now.

The biggest differences are with software in the TC/VSC systems, other proprietary ECU/emissions stuff, and whether the car is assembled in a way that makes servicing maintenance items easier or more difficult. All automobiles today are assembled from pre assembled components that all come together for final assembly on an automated line, and aren't really designed with ease of maintenance in mind, but efficiency of manufacturing instead. And you couldn't have that as an industry standard process if vehicles still needed the same level of maintenance as they did 30 years ago.

newer European cars are typically a nightmare to do maintenance on, with some exceptions. I'd never personally own a BMW 7 series for any reason, but I like that so many people do! Asian cars are so-so for ease of repair, although Nissan seems to have persistent issues with fuel injection and engine management in Infinity cars. American cars run the gamut. Jeep has in my experience been the easiest to work on, but is known for electrical component problems, Ford and GM are ok, but I hate GM interiors and Ford engines. And new diesel pick up trucks are uniformly all expensive garbage now, thanks to emissions equipment. But again I'm glad so many people have them!

Forgot to ad:

The biggest factor in reliability is what third party manufacturers the automakers are sourcing components from.

Different companies make things like bearings, seals or electrical connectors or other parts that wind up inside components like engines and transmissions. If those components are poorly made, it affects the lifespan of the components themselves and will create a failure point that occurs before the anticipated design life of the vehicle.

I will say that I give a slight edge to European cars in this regard, but that is fading since many are using parts sourced in China now. But that didn't used to be the case.

Toyota seems to source more of its parts in-house than virtually any other brand. So there's that

Another former Toyota/Honda devotee - we bought a 2015 Sorento and love it. Was rated higher for reliability and safety when we bought it than the comparable Hondas. Not a single issue yet, very happy.

When they have a V6 engine and the optional 3rd row seating, plus a bunch of other options (heated seats, panoramic sunroof, leather, back up camera, etc.) the cost can exceed $40k.
