6th grader at APS has zero homewrk in middle school

I love that he has none. There was too much in elementary school.

+100

If the grades are good they obviously aren't getting 'incompletes' on assignments. I still ask 'do you have any homework' daily, but take my son's answer as truth since he just brought home straight As.

I have a 4th grader and 6th grader (both boys) and their elementary school assigned quite a bit and I never interfered. They developed really good habits about getting it done early, in class if offered and before sports practices. Truthfully, I barely know what they are doing in school but they are GT/straight A. I feel the elementary school did a great job at developing good work/study habits early on.

I have a 7th grader at Swanson. Last year in 6th, he consistently had math homework (Math 7 for 6ht graders) each night, but could finish it very quickly. Not many tests either. 7th grade has ramped up the work in a big way - multiple tests and quizzes each week, and homework each night in Alg 1 and Latin 1. Next week he has 3 projects due. So enjoy it while it lasts!

Same experience with my kids at TJ

I still say I'd be pissed about tons of homework in middle school, there is just no point.

We are living in a different world, my friend. No comparison to when you were in MS and HS back in the dark ages.

Well I don't know about the dark ages, lol. But, I guess it is a different world in terms of competitiveness.

She has very regular tests in her 4 core classes so I feel like we are constantly studying for those rather than doing busy work homework. She has had 4 tests in the last 3 days with another one this Friday.

So Williamsburg ended up going to block scheduling after all? And, as critics predicted, it has created wasted time?

OP here. DD is at Williamsburg. She brought home straight As so I know she’s getting her work done, just not at home. My issue is that she has so much free time in the afternoon with nothing to do. We purposely held back on committing to too many activities as we thought she’d need more time to focus on school but it’s been quite the opposite. Need to find her some afternoon activities so she’s not on her phone constantly or nagging me!

She's only, what 12? Does she have any friends nearby? Make her go out and play.

She can do some of my 7th grader's homework. He has a few hours of it everyday.

OP, you may conclude that she is getting her work done, such as that work is, but if my 6th grader had zero assignments that required any sort of outside home study, I would be very concerned about the quality of education my DC was getting.

Just a thought.

We are in Loudoun and MS starts in 6th grade. My son has block scheduling. The transition has been enormous. He does most of his homework in his free period, so yes he has homework, but mainly completes it at school. His primary responsibilities are studying for tests and rrading comprehension homework for English, plus lots of reading (about 20 pages per night for English). Math takes a decwnt amount of time, as he's doing a compressed 6/7 so he can get in Algebrs 1 in 7th.

Im shocked at how little they are "babysat" now. He has to take notes, study and keep 7 teachers and 7 classes organized.

Yup. My American son goes to a Math center to get ahead in math and take private foreign language classes. These two learning centers are full of bright Asian children. He is THE ONLY American child in thr Math classes and one of 2 American children in early language and most of those kids are working on their 3rd language. Many Americans are being left in the dust as these kids blow past them.

Big change in high school...

My DC 6th grade at Pyle has at least 30-60 mins of homework on average every day. Now its another issue that it sometimes takes couple of hours [or more] to complete... What school is this in W that has no HW for 6th grade?

+1. When my white DC was the only caucasian in the highest level math class in MS, I knew we were in trouble. And he was. He lasted only about 3 months.
