are you required to take a doctor note when you use a sick day?

At my (large govt agency) office, the rule is that a note is needed for 3 or more days of sick leave in a row OR if you are on "leave restriction". Usually people on leave restriction have a track record of suspected abuse of sick leave.

Nope. I got one once when I was diagnosed with pneumonia and the doctor wanted me to stay home for at least a week. But I never needed it because my boss is a normal, decent person.

90% of the time I'm sick I don't go to the doctor. I'm not playing hooky either, I just don't run to the doctor with the flu or pneumonia.

I think our policy is a note's only required after 3 or 5 consecutive sick days.

Exactly. Seriously?

Seriously ridiculous. It's a reason people drag themselves to work when they shouldn't, and get the rest of us sick. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/13/health/working-sick.html?_r=0

Same. I will drag myself into the office for a day on the forth day or work from home to avoid the doctors, then three days restart.

This reminds me of a story - when I was in college, one summer I worked at a restaurant at the beach. I woke up with pink eye one day and called out, saying I was going to the nearby urgent care. Well, I guess the manager didn't believe me because he called the urgent care center and while I was being seen, a nurse came back and said, "um, your boss is on the phone?"

I had a project manager try and demand a doctor's note when I was home sick with norovirus. It was right after Thanksgiving (my entire family caught the virus from a relative that came to dinner knowing they were still contagious!) and the PM was convinced I was trying to scam for more time at home with my family.

It was pretty humiliating having to explain to him that I couldn't leave my apartment to go to the doctor as I was pretty much guaranteed to crap myself before I made it out of the complex parking lot. I then proceeded to dry heave while still on the phone with him so I had to hang up on him because there was no chance I was *only* going to vomit.

No—because I’m an adult and my boss should take my word for it that I have a stomach bug. Nothing to do but wait it out.

Only after 3 days, which has never happened outside of having babies, thank goodness and knock on wood.

Not until now. I rarely use sick time but when I do its for a good reason - either kids or myself. Recently had vertigo and some days I couldn't safely drive - from the outside I looked normal but days started to stack up and sure enough after a day 3 I was called by boss for a note. I got one but of course now I'm out for anything - had stomach virus boss brought to the office and was out 2 days..I went back in before I should have so I wouldn't have to go get a note..I wasn't sick enough for a doctors appointment. Its crazy if you ask me..If you look at my leave records you will see I don't use much but when I do I need it...but this boss is something special..

No notes at my current employer. At a previous employer, it was 3 days. Once I had the flu, and instead of going into the doctor on the 4th day, I went to work. My manager nicely ripped me a new one, and told me not to come back until I was well. That was over ten years ago, and outside of maternity leave, I've never needed more than a day or two.

how often are you sick for 7 days in a row. You make it sound like a regular occurrence.
