Failed FET - try for a fresh transfer?

Anonymous
Sometimes a frozen transfer is better because of hormone levels after stimming, but my understanding is that they can test those levels and give you feedback about whether or not fresh is a good choice. I wanted to do a fresh day 3 transfer on my last round b/c I hadn't gotten any blasts from my prior rounds despite a pretty good number of eggs (I'm over 40), but my progesterone wasn't in the range where my RE felt there was a good chance of success. Freezing 3 day embies isn't a great option b/c they have so few cells that the risk of damage is much higher, plus I know that the most likely reason that none are making it to blast is that they're not genetically normal. I waited and ended up with 1 blast to freeze, but unfortunately it didn't take on the FET.

When I started all this, I also wanted to do PGS, but that went out the window after seeing that I get next to no embryos that make it to blast. There is some risk that an embryo would be damages by the biopsy and/or the freezing process, so I won't take the chance. If I had a good number of blasts, I would definitely do PGS, though.

OP here. Thanks for your input, ladies. The article I actually ready today was a study that was done in fresh vs frozen. It said if the progesterone level is too high and lingering from the ivf cycle, it seemed to prevent implantation. If the level was normal, the success of fresh vs frozen was the same.  So, that's interesting and PP's doc did the right thing by doing blood work.  I am hoping the doc would check my blood before I did a fresh. If it was out of whack, I would wait, like the PP did.

I believe my doc will only transfer 5 day blasts and won't freeze anything prior to 5 days, but I'll double check once I start stimming. I will definitely do PGS if I have any frosties, but I'm going to give it a shot with the fresh. Now, I just need to get my damn period! It is nowhere in sight. My doc started me on Provera on Monday, so hopefully that will help.

I think this is SG's new policy. Or, new within the last two years or so. I've been told that only in extenuating circumstances now will they consider doing a 3dt and they won't freeze anything before 5 days.

OP, you are relatively still young and bought multi-cycle package already. And the fact you already had one normal blastocyst in the past albeit the end result, I feel that the odds is in your favor. Good luck!!
