Lee highway and Wilson backup starting at 7am, while there is 24% vacancy rate.

Not true. It doesn't back up until 8 or later. I walk or drive down there every morning.

And those parents raised the kids who will be at Stratford.

+1

And ugh. My kids will likely be there too with the entitled brats. We would have loved a MS in Rosslyn.

What % would have ridden the bus if it were a neighborhood school? Less than a choice school.

You do understand the reason why parents are upset is because back when it was an "urban high [sic] school" they were going to have around 1400 middle school students then.

They are spending even more now on the HB school, for less than 1000.

That's the issue about the fancy building; they have smaller population but the budget has risen.

As for riding the bus, during the presentations they talked about the middle school population in Rosslyn -- it is nonexistent. You *might* get some walkers from Lyon Village, but by middle school most families have moved out of the apartments and small townhouses that are the vast majority of Rosslyn real estate.

Where do you live that a MS in Rosslyn is attractive to you?

Don't put any of that on H-B. They were forced to move there.

We are in a TH by Courthouse. There are TONS of families around here and people aren't moving out like they were 10 years ago. There are also plenty of public bus routes already headed to Rosslyn (Metro & ART) if we didn't want to add more school buses.

Or maybe we should have put a k-8 school there. Plenty of other ways to more efficiently use that space. Oh well. Thanks, whiners.

To answer the question, I imagine that Stratford will be a mixture of Williamsburg and Swanson.

Can you help me understand what that means?

Unless you are asking people to spit out their predjudices about the children who attend different schools you just won’t get a satisfying, honest answer to this question. Personally, I know lots of awesome, friendly kids at both Williamsburg and Swanson; I have had kids at both. And there are a few who aren’t so awesome, just like at any middle school.

The new school will be great! (Note - My kids will not be in that district). The building will be beautiful, filled with great kids. I love walkable neighborhood schools -- and I know some folks have other priorities -- but I think it adds some cohesion to the neighborhood.

By "new school" do you mean the new MS? Those kids will not be walking. They could, but their parents will drive them, because they think the traffic is dangerous. Or they'll drive them because the bus comes too early.

I think it will be great. We're less than a mile away so my kids will be walking, assuming we end up zoned there.

My kids will be walking - live 5 blocks away across Lee Highway. There actually is an old tunnel under Lee Highway that was used when it was Stratford before. Perhaps it will be reopened.

No it's not. We borrowed the Wilson school for a couple of years when our daycare was under renovation, and there was plenty of traffic then, and that was for 200 kids. I can't imagine what a mess it's going to be when it's a full-blown school with 700 kids and teachers.

I looked at all the maps. In every single one of them, my kid will be at Stratford. It's going to be the same upper middle class student body that is at all the elementary schools in the area. Some will be nice, but there will be a lot of mommies in black yoga pants and ball caps.

And I probably will be driving my kid to school because it's on the way to work so I'll just get him out the door at the same time as I go, because it is early and I don't trust him to get himself out of the house. He'll have to get himself home. Thankfully we live on the Lee Heights side, so crossing Lee Highway will be at a better crossing than the ones closer to Quincy.

Well, you said you were not a Kenmore parent. Just another lie, I guess.

I'll grant you that there's plenty of bitching and moaning in that part of Arlington, but the Roslyn site was just not appropriate for an ordinary middle school. It was too small.

And yeah, HB will get a building far fancier than necessary. Arlington always overbuilds fancy.

What are you talking about? Never said I was a Kenmore parent. Without changes, I'm a Williamsburg parent.

The site should work for 1000 students especially since HB students can come and go from campus as they please.

As a neighborhood school, it was 2.6 acres for 1400 kids, while the Stratford site is 8.8 acres.
