+1. High school grade inflation is rampant. I've seen kids get As in AP classes then score 1s and 2s on the actual test. Let's see the SAT or ACT numbers of these admits. |

This is Harvard Westlake School. Yes, GPAs are high (according to the table on page 2 here: http://students.hw.com/Portals/44/profile.pdf), but so are test scores. According to Business Insider, they have the third highest scores of any private school in the country.
The average student got above a 700 per section on the SAT and a 32 average on the ACT (mentioned in the link above). That is basically the score range at many top 20-30 universities. The average weighted GPA is a 3.8. So anyone at 3.9+ is probably scoring higher than a 700, and those who are at a 4.3+ especially at or above a 750. Needless to say that GPA is pretty telling with such a strong group of students. |

| Really interesting. As said above, would love to see this with athletic recruits taken out. True recruits are admitted at 100% acceptance rate to one school of their choice, so their inclusion here skews the "specials" admit rare higher. I guess you could google for web postings about recruited HWL students but I'm not going to bother |

| Doesn't this chart mean that some kids, albeit a low percentage, are getting in even though not "hooked." After all these DCUM threads that say that you need a national award to get in to HYPS unless you are a legacy, URM, or athlete, this actually sounds pretty good to me. |

That was my takeaway too. That non-hooked students are getting into HYS with acceptance rates considerably above the overall one is a comforting sign. If you look at the GPA breakdown the numbers get even better- for instance, 42% of the non-hooked students with 4.3+ got into Harvard. Yet at the same time, these numbers feel a LOT better than top publics like TJHS and the Bethesda results posted earlier. I get the feeling that there is something about the non-hooked students we're not seeing. Maybe they're nationally acclaimed award winners. Maybe their parents are top donors even without an alumni connection. This is a cursory glance at what the process could be like, but there is a lot of detail missing. |

Actually they do. Prince Edward attended Cambridge having only got C grades on his A levels when everyone else was expected to get A grades (and did). Its a royal perk which hasn't been taken up by more recently royals for fear of making themselves even more unpopular. |

Be aware that these are acceptance numbers, so it may be the same top 10 or so students getting into many of the top schools. You can't conclude that a typical student has the acceptance percentage chance of getting accepted. |

But that would be true for the Bethesda/TJHS results too, no? There are definitely extraordinary students at both who are likely getting into all the Ivies they apply to.

Interesting that WashU is so popular. It's the second most popular school after USC. The school has 290 graduates, and 38 hooked and 184 nonhooked applied to WashU.
