What kind of phone does your tween have?

Both of mine started with cheap pay as you go phones. They were awful and the kids weren't happy. I hated dealing with them. We switched them to iPhones after they proved they could be responsible, and we've all been happier for it.

I'm worried this will be an expensive option--a big monthly fee for a 10 year old who only needs it for emergencies.

It is $10 a month extra for our famil phone (old iPhone 5).

That's what we did too.

None. I just took it away for at least a week.

Wanted to add that we have Verizon, and we share the family data plan. Adding a line is not that expensive. You can cap how much data each phone can use (but you can always use the app to add more if they run out and there's still "family" data left). The parental controls are fairly easy to use and you can make them as restrictive (or not) as you wish (i.e., who can call in, who they can call out, etc).
