Bedtimes and wake up times for tweens

Her MS starts at 7:25.

In elementary I'm sure your child had the same start times all of these other elementary kids do.

If my 12 year old is in bed at 10:30, that's a really good night. He's up by 6:45. I wish he could sleep an hour more, but his commitments don't allow it. In any event, he seems rested and does very well in school, so I guess it's enough...he has never required tons of sleep.

10:30pm?? Are you kidding? What is he doing that he is going to bed that late? It can't sustain. Right around 9th grade, they need a ton more sleep.

Every kid is different. I think 10:30 is probably the earliest my kids went to bed in middle school. In HS, 11 or 11:30 is a good night - he needs downtime before homework and has after school practice/rehearsal 3 times a week. My kids never had an 8 o'clock bed time at any age. Ready to hear from all the parents who tuck their 14 year olds in at 7:45 when most people are eating dinner.

He's a competitive swimmer and has a lot of homework every night. He NEVER went to bed early even when he was very little (earliest bedtime was probably 8-8:30 when he was in preschool). I guess he just requires less sleep than other kids.

12 YO twins. 9:30 lights out on weeknights, flexible on weekends. They seem to fall asleep within 15 minutes. 6:00 wake up on weekdays, they hop up with no trouble.

Your bus stop must be one of the first stops. Our bus comes at 6:45 and it is the last stop. If our bus came at 6:15 I would drive DD to the last stop so that she could have extra time in the morning.

Bedtime for 12 y.o. 7th grader is 9 but it sometimes takes him a while to fall asleep. Gets up at 5:45 am and has to be out the door at 6:30 to catch middle school bus at 6:40. It's not enough sleep but we couldn't make bedtime any earlier with dinner, homework, bath, and a little downtime before bed.

No, we have a lot of commitments, activities and homework...and kids are still in bed by 8 most nights.

11 year old, in bed lights out at 8:30-9:00, wakes at 6:30. Not quite enough sleep (she's hard to wake)

13 year old, lights out a little later (9:00 weekdays, 9:30-10 weekends. ) Wake him at 6:25. Also hard to wake!

My 9 year old falls asleep around 10:30. I say goodnight to her around 8:45, let her read in bed for a half-hour, but she has trouble falling asleep. I wish she didn't.

In bed 8ish and lights out at 8:30 3 day/week. The other 2 days he has sports practice and gets to bed around 9:30 with lights out immediately. Has to be up at 6:15 (to leave for school at 7:10 - school starts at 7:35, but I drive him.)

On the late nights, he is exhausted.

On the weekend, he is typically up on his own by 6:30/7ish.

Our kids did not have a consistent or enforced bedtime at that age. We let them decide as long as they were up on time for school, managing to get everything done, and generally exhibiting a reasonably polite attitude around the house (no being grumpy & rude and using tiredness as an excuse). Typical times they went to sleep were between 9-11 in MS and almost always by 12:30 in high school.

12 & 14. Screens off at 9pm. Lights out at 9:30. 12 yr old is usually up at 6:15 and leaves at 7pm to walk to school. 14 yr old is up at 7pm and leaves (with me) at 7:30.

This bedtime is new this school year -- for the last few years it had been half an hour earlier.

Also, this is school nights only, Fri-Sat they can stay up until midnight but sometimes choose to go to bed earlier. The usually sleep until 9am or later on weekends.
