If you went to UVA

What does this response mean?

I'm asking because a bulk of the attendees at Wolftrap seem to be UVA; a bulk subset of which seem to be incredibly obnoxious. Is there an understanding to be ill behaved at Wolftrap that I'm not aware of? Is there an understanding that UVA students are ill behaved in public? Please clarify. I'm genuinely interested and curious.

Also curious. Isn't UVA a public school?

It is, unfortunately. Obnoxious on your tax dollars, even better! Though I am sure the students are not all bad (spoiled or whatever) there. I sense a strong reluctance to answer this question, however.

Some people in this area pride themselves on behaving as if they have no parents.

How on earth would you know where attendees at a Wolftrap function went to school? And please don't tell me it's because of their school logo hats, shirts, etc., because we all know anyone can buy that stuff. Shockingly, in a state with a very competitive public university, many residents with no affiliation at all choose to do so out of state pride. So maybe Virginians are just obnoxious? Or people who are proud of their state school? Or people who wanted to go to UVa?

I know UVA is a good school. Is it on the same level as UC Berkeley, U of Tx at Austin, U of Wisc at Madison etc?

I'll speak for myself. I have sat next to large groups at Wolftrap, multiple times, who have clearly discussed their experiences as UVA students. I know nothing about the school. It is a beautiful campus, and I have a special fondness for Charlottesville. Whenever I have attended Wolftrap, I almost always end up next to (the aforementioned) and the group is almost always obnoxious. Too often to be coincidental. In order to give the benefit of the doubt, I asked for an explanation.

Also, what exactly is meant by "because it is Wolftrap"? It is an honest question.

UVA is much better regarded then U TX at Austin and Madison. Berkeley is close the the same league. It is very academic and very hard to get into. The kids I went to school with were incredible. Most were of the student council president/still like to have a good time/and get straight As type. I feel lucky to have gone there (I was out of state).

UVA students are like any other random group of people thrown together - there are assholes and non-assholes. As a graduate of UVA - yep, there are assholes. We made fun of them. Pretentious, snobby, etc. But they aren't the whole make-up of the school. Having grown up near Blacksburg, I can say that there are definitely some jerks from Tech - but I don't try to say that every person who went/goes there is a terrible, unrefined pot-head. Cause they aren't.

Why are they snobby if it is a state school? Puzzling. I had not heard of UVA until I spent time in VA. Do they know that is the same of most?

Does UVA set aside X number of spaces for residents?

When I was there (graduated in '98) the ration was 60/40 (in-state/out-of-state).

UVA is a fantastic school. It is a state school. Though if you're from NoVA, you are actually disadvantaged in terms of admissions.

My problem with UVA, frankly, is general obnoxiousness about having attended UVA. . . the CONSTANT correcting of "first year" as opposed to "freshman" and "grounds" as opposed to "campus." (You've already seen in here). God, F'in FORBID if you use the incorrect term in front of someone who went to UVA. And, regardless of what is used in Charlottesville to distinguish itself, it is HIGHLY annoying.

But . . . having said all that . . . if my DD were lucky enough to get into UVA, I'd be thrilled. On academics, it is top notch.

In what areas of academics besides the MBA program and law school?

I went to UVA and I'm very well-behaved at Wolftrap. I sit in my seat and listen to the music. I never "correct" anyone about any of the proper terminology, I think it's ridiculous. Not everyone who went to UVA is obnoxious. You're just generalizing from some bad experiences.

I could do the same about people who went to Harvard. I've met several Harvard graduates who have been really rude to me. One was an attorney at a law firm I worked at who wouldn't speak to me (a non-attorney) in the hallway because "she went to Harvard and is planning on being partner here one day." Meaning, it wouldn't do to be seen talking to the "help" in any way that could be perceived as social rather than getting help. The other was another attorney I sat next to in a language class. On the first day we were supposed to greet the person sitting next to us and find out a little bit about them. She told me she'd just graduated from law school and had just moved to DC for her first job. So I told her I worked for a law firm, and asked her what firm she was with. She replied "Well I went to Harvard, so..." And I didn't get it, so I said, "and..." And she replied "So I'm CLERKING for a JUDGE, I don't work for a law firm." She said it real nasty like I'd just insulted her in the worst possible way.

Now I could generalize about these experiences and say everyone who went to Harvard is an a-hole, but I actually don't think that's true. I just happened to meet 2 people who went to Harvard who are also supreme stuck-up jerks.
