Our 'system' that is not really a 'system':
Every night, we pick up and spot clean the whole house, which includes rinsing the dishes from the day and putting them in the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is full, we run it. We did this when we didn't have a dishwasher also - it just took longer because we were washing everything by hand. I will say that we don't have a sink full of dishes every day, because we do most of our cooking for the week on Sundays. And everyone is at work/school all day. So at most, we'll have breakfast bowls sitting all day, and then whatever from dinner. |
Get a better dishwasher (I'm not being snarky). I scrape food chunks off, but then put my dishes right in the dishwasher without rinsing. We're only a family of 3 and I run the dishwasher every 3rd day. No leftover food after the dishwasher is ran. |
Modern dishwashers use minimal water and shouldn't require pre-rinsing. Also, in this area, we get our water from the Potomac. It doesn't really matter if we use a little bit of water or a lot. I came from an area where water is scarce and precious. Here, water is precious but not scarce. |

I either wash or rinse and put in the dishwasher right after we use. Unless it is really something that needs soaking. Then I put in the sink to soak.
If dishes are driving you crazy, why not use the dishwasher? |
Wow such great tips from others I'm going to start using my dishwasher right away! Thanks all! |
No problem. |
Let me guess, you're Asian. |
| I don't use my dishwasher. I use a clean wash cloth and hot soapy water. I rinse dishes before washing them and I scrub my sink every day. My sink is always clean and shiny and my dishes are always clean. I wash dishes 2-4 times a day. |
Wrong you racist fuck |

Rinse dishes immediately after use and put in dishwasher, run dishwasher when I go to bed, empty while the coffee's brewing. Every. Single. Day.
Nothing sits in my sink ever. |

Most dishes are rinsed and put in the dishwasher right away. I do hand wash the kids plastic stuff, my good good knives, and most of my pots and pans. I usually hand wash twice a day, before dinner prep so I have a clean sink to work with, and after dinner so the sink is empty before bedtime.
I have two sponges. One sits by the sink, the other sits in the top rack of the dishwasher. Every few days, I swap them out so they stay clean. I set the dishwasher on its delay feature to it runs overnight, and then we unload it in the morning. If we eat dinner and lunch out, we might skip running it and just wait for a fuller load the next day. I also grew up not using my dishwasher except for special occasion, but I can't imagine living like that now! |

Immediately put dishes that can go in, into dishwasher during the day/evening when we are home
I do 99% of dinner cooking and clean as I go. DH does 99% of meal clean up and immediately takes care of any dishes/pans that didn't make it into the dishwasher while I cleaned as I went, or are not dishwasher safe. Run when full, pretty much every day. First adult down empties it. |
Meant to add, we both work FT also (have a 14 yo and 10yo), and have never had a sink full of dishes because that would gross me out. Kids help with clearing and loading dishwasher as needed. |
This is us too. Dds plastic and silicone things get washed after th meal and put on a drying rack. It takes like 2 minutes to wash a couple dishes of hers. If I dirty a spoon or knife I either wash it immediately or put into dishwasher for that evening. No dirty dishes in the sink ever except maybe an oatmeal pot left to soak for 20 min while we eat breakfast. |
