Thank you!!! Why can't folks see that spending money to change a racist school name is NOT the same as spending money on a special election, where the same vote could have occurred in November? One is correcting a past mistake, and one is committing a current, avoidable mistake. |

Because they don't view it as a mistake. They don't see it as problematic because it doesn't impact them. Whiny babies, snow flake, etc. Also, racism. |

I mean, it's morally wrong to have ANY school named after confederates. But it's particularly egregious now at those schools. Now we're paying for the sins of our grandparents. But that's the way it goes. Btw the town I grew up in changed its name (was established as New Berlin, in a primarily German-American area) during WW1 because the Germans were our enemy then and there was a lot of anti-German sentiment. It was considered the right thing to do. And everyone survived and life went on! Just as it will when we change the name of the schools named after confederates. |

It's more nuanced than that. The plan was to name the school Franconia HS, and that angered people from Springfield whose kids were slated to attend the school. To resolve that issue, the School Board initially named the school Lee HS, since it would be in the Lee District (which was named because Fitzhugh Lee once had large holdings in the area). In 1964, the name was changed to Robert E. Lee HS. For most of the school's existence, it has honored a Confederate general, but the argument that the 1958 School Board deliberately picked the names to protest integration is debatable. What is clear is that the FCPS School Board of the late 1950s opposed integration, dragged its heels to integrate the schools, and ultimately landed on names that many current students and families find unacceptable. |

Have any of you ever heard of Dalia Palchik? Good to know that you find her "creepy". How about Martina Hone? She was pretty well respected. I didn't agree with all her views, but I respected her effort to use common sense. Something that is lacking on this Board. But, you think they are creepy. So............... |

I found Grisafe's right-wing views creepy. Didn't really care if he has kids. Although, both Palchik and Hone had more skin in the FCPS game than Grisafe ever had. Palchik attended FCPS from K to 12 and is a language teacher. Hone is a public policy expert and has continued with her advocacy since leaving the School Board. It was very obvious to most voters than Grisafe was just looking for some elected position where he could ingratiate himself further with the local Republicans. With two solid losses under his belt, that seems increasingly unlikely. |

| I like Hone, but, I don't see the difference. She was very, very new to Fairfax County and had her own agenda. Grisafe has been here for several years. Who are you to know what his thinking is? Seems like a well-meaning guy to me. |

Your suggestion that voters can't really have any insight into Grisafe's thinking, even though the GOP endorsed him in late June, probably helps explain why he lost by such an overwhelming margin. If you don't really show your hand, but rely on support from the likes of Elizabeth Schultz and Resistance Media, it's not going to end well. |

Dalia is a former teacher though...so yeah she doesn't have kids but she has educational experience. Very different from a random dude who works for a defense consultant with no connections to the educational system at all. |

Oh, please. I am a conservative and I never heard about Resistance Media until someone wrote about it on here and played dirty politics. That was unfair mudslinging--are you the one who did it? You should be ashamed of yourself. In fact, I wonder if that twitter account was created by one of the bluevirginia people. They sure jumped on it fast. And, that is what is wrong here. Really low class to accuse someone of racism who is clearly not a racist. |

It would have been easy enough to disavow the support of an anti-semitic, white supremacist who photoshopped a picture of Grisafe with Pepe the Frog. As far as I know, no such disavowal took place. You can keep whining, but such a resounding defeat really ought to prompt introspection on the part of the Fairfax GOP as to why they lost so badly. |

He actually did disavow it if you watched the debate. And, FWIW, how was he supposed to know about it if he wasn't following Resistance Media? That was a dirty attack and you know it. |
