Don't know what to do with 5yo with suspected ADHD

OP I want to give you the perspective of someone who was where you are about 8 years ago.

My DD was just like your son, to a T. She had a very rough K and 1st grade year always getting consequences at school and they never worked. We were trying OT and behavioral therapy at the same time and noticed some regulation but very little difference.

Before grade 2 she started a stimulant. The very first day was like a new world. It was like the child I knew was in there had the ability to shine. It was glorious, no exaggeration. Her 2nd grade teacher thought we were crazy when we explained the problems of the past.

We had to adjust the meds a little over the years and we have regular preteen issues, but no impulsivity, hyperactivity or "hopped up" behavior she had when she was 2-7 yo.

My DD is a straight A 8th grader. She has several close friends, she volunteers at the animal shelter and elementarg school. She has the focus to play 3 instruments and the attention to know and follow the rules of her rec softball team. I have no doubt she will be just fine, and the thing I have to correct now dress codes--are her bra straps showing when she goes out of the house? Normal stuff.

I want you to know that I almost lost my mind worrying about her. Didn't sleep well for years, worried about the next call from the school, watched playdates like a hawk and constantly consistently managed behavior. I had to get in to a therapist myself because I felt like such a failure. Please please know that you are not a failure, you are helping your child, it will take time, Take care of yourself, and it WILL get better. This is the worst part--when you know something needs to be addressed and it hasn't become clear exactly what you need to do.

We medicated our small 5-year-old starting in K. We just had her annual physical and growth curves looked great -- there's been no discernible impact of medicine on growth.

Anyway, you can monitor the impact of medication on growth--maybe not week-to-week, but over time. If meds start impacting growth you can always make an informed decision--based on all the pros and cons--to go off them.
