Will DC provide solar eclipse eyewear for first day of school?

Our DCPS has parent-teacher conferences that day. Do other DCPS schools actually have class on the 21st?

Yes, for every grade except PK. What grade is your child in?

We got a message from our principal at West that the school has certified glasses and will be viewing.

Yes, Deal has the glasses too. If you want to opt your child out, there is a form on the website you can send in to the homeroom teacher.

My 2nd grader would be devastated to miss it and I don't see any reason why he should. No risk at all as long as kids keep their glasses on. So maybe not for the PK'ers, if there aren't enough adults to supervise, but would be fine for everyone else.

Wrong. There is great risk. Most glasses aren't really certified and are poor fitting--especially for children. The darkness causes eyes to dilate and eliminate the body's reflex to not open eyes to the sun's radiation. I'm not saying don't let them give it a try, but don't be naive enough to say there's no risk. With so so many experts being vocal about the risks, I don't understand why so many of you want to brush that off.

Anyone concerned about the risk for their child should send in an opt out letter (or form if the school posted one, like Deal did).

The way I learned from my kids two schools was by looking at their web sites. Here is yours: http://www.hardyms.org/apps/news/show_news.jsp?REC_ID=464894&id=0

Thanks, as a newbie to the school I've been checking the Hardy site a few times a week just to make sure I'm not missing stuff but did not come across this section.

No problem. Most sites are pretty busy at the beginning of the year!

Has anyone heard if K classes are participating at various schools? They seem young and would often be brand new to the school and teacher.

KIPP DC all grades are participating except PK3/4 - Smithsonian donated enough glasses for all kids K-12.
