Why do people join annual pool membership?

Good thing you're not a member of a pool I guess? Oh wait! No, I see, you're a typical DCUM twat who wanted to passive aggressively troll how what you like is better than what other people like. Carry on.

And yes absolutely you are correct no one in the DMV with a pool membership has ever been to a BBQ or the zoo.

There are swim teams at public pools. At least they are there in MoCo Maryland where I live.

Judging from your writing, you are not a native born American, right? Having a pool membership is a part of a typical suburban American childhood. Swim team, bbqs, socializing with friends. It's just what you do, it's the custom. Also, it's a far cry from a country club and has nothing to do with being similar people. Anyone can buy a membership.

Where are these public pools I read about on DCUM? The indoor rec centers? My kids like to swim. I don't particularly like hanging out with the people at the pool and we have to drive a bit because the closer ones have ridiculous wait lists. I join for the kids.

Reston.

It's a little baffling for people who grew up in Reston to move elsewhere as an adult and hear people asking, "So, do you belong to a pool?" So different, just a few miles away.

Where do you live? Nearest me is Upton Hill in Arlington.

A lot of them are neighborhood-based. Are you suggesting people not be neighborly?

You know there is more than 1 person posting here, right? I'm a native born American and no one where I grew up had pool memberships. We went to public pools (where we had swim teams) and socialized with our friends. Your "custom" is not the universal American experience.

I'm a stay at home mom. My kids and I are at the pool morning to night. They are outside playing, being active and not on their screens. Now that they're older I just watch while I talk to my other SAHM friends. It's the best way to spend the summer for us.
We will go to the zoo in October.

Reston pools are not public. You have to be a member of RA or buy a pool membership to go.

A thing called google might help you. For example, here's a list of all the public pools in MoCo.

+1 Not everyone has 1K to drop on a private pool membership. Certainly not in my neighborhood.

seems fairly obvious, no? people want to swim in the summer when it's hot outside?

+1 People I know with pool club memberships want to be with people "like themelves" at the club.

Pool memberships cost like 1k for the summer. A CC membership starts in the mid five figures with ongoing monthly dues of over 500. Not the same thing at all.
