Why do I get headaches when it rains or is about to rain

Anonymous
Same. It's definitely in my sinuses and ears. For me, caffeine seems to help the most but doesn't fix it 100%, pain meds don't help much. If anyone has a remedy that's really helped, please share it!

As soon as we arrived home, they returned. The humidity is too much here.

I have bad headaches from the humidity here too. How far north did you have to go to be free of them? I'm thinking of leaving the DC area and this would be so helpful to know! Thank you.

When I was young, my dad often got “sinus headaches,” which he’d treat with a combination of Sudafed and Tylenol. (I put that in quotation marks because my migraine doctor says there’s no such thing as a “sinus headache” and pain in the sinus area is just a different kind of migraine.) I have the same type of headache, especially when it rains, and often took Sudafed up till I was diagnosed with migraines and started actual migraine treatments.

It always seemed like the Sudafed helped at least a little. From what PP said on page one about blood vessels expanding, it seems possible that Sudafed’s effect on tightening blood vessels could help. It’s certainly easy enough to give it a shot, PP! You have to get the real stuff from the pharmacy counter, though, the other decongestant they sell on the regular shelves is worthless.

Yup, me too. Was just noticing I had a mild headache this am and figured it was the weather...

Happens to me too. I hate it.

Started for me after having Covid. It hadn't rained in so long it took me a while to figure out why I feel so bad today.

I usually do a saline wash and some Valsalva maneuvers, seems to take the edge off. I can hear better too.

Have any of you tried Botox shots as a migraine preventative?

For me, this shows up as hearing changes, slight dizziness, and exhaustion. I hear pitch changes in my tinnitus and feel pressure in my ears.

I’m drinking a lot of fluids and hope that will help.

I’m also extremely tired.

I was avoiding the tiny bit of caffeine I sometimes have but maybe I will reconsider since caffeine helped a few of you.

I had this issue for 20 years. Terrible headaches brought on by changes in the pressure and I'd get maybe 3 migraines a year. My doctor gave me a migraine RX for after the migraine started, and that helped, but I eventually tried acupuncture to see if that would act as prevention for headaches and migraines. It made a world of difference for me. I was seeing an acupuncturist a couple times a week for about 4 months. This was 7-8 years ago and the number and severity of headaches has dropped considerably. I haven't had a migraine since and I've had very few headaches. I know acupuncture is still seen as a little woo-woo, but it's worth a try for people willing to venture into the woo-woo.

I get the same, always have. My parents always said it was due to barometric pressure. My hair also grows and frizzes (think Monica in that Friends episode) well before rain hits.

They are sinus headaches. It comes from the change in air pressure. It is well documented.

Have you never googled it?

Fire your doctor. Seriously.

Just to distinguish, this article is about Sudafed PE and other drugs with Phenylephrine. "Old fashioned" Sudafed, which is kept behind the counter at the drugstore, contains pseudoephedrine. My experience lines up with this article: Sudafed PE does not help me. Regular Sudafed does.
