| someone mentioned the coffee earlier - how many people usually attend those? are they helpful? |
I am a current Beauvoir parent and this post is very offensive. I do not want to believe the culture of the school is like this. So according to you what makes a good class list versus a bad class list???? |
|
I think the "good kids and bad kids" poster is a troll. They made it clear when our child began pre-k that your kids will probably have all of his or her classmates in their class over the course of the 5 years. I found that very appealing.
I thought the coffees were great! They seem to draw anywhere from 25 to 50 parents and usually provide a lot of valuable information and plenty of opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback or bring up issues. The way they are set up you can leave at any time, so no problem if you need to slip out to get to work. |
I agree that the "good class" poster is a troll. I plead with other Beauvoir parents to contact your buddy family or the school with these questions. This really is not the appropriate forum to discuss these things. |
| This isn't an "appropriate place to discuss these things"? I've got no dog in this issue, but wow that post speaks volumes about the poster, though hopefully not the school. |
Yup, troll. |

I'm the 13:32 poster, and am certainly not a troll. I'm someone reading this trying get a bit more information about Beauvoir and the community because we're trying to decide whether to apply this year. Like everyone else, I've heard mixed things about the school, both in "real life" and on DC Urban Moms. I just found the comment about this not being an "appropriate place" to discuss school issues to come off as insular and in poor taste. Certainly, class lists and the perception of good and bad class lists exist pretty much everywhere, and what is the harm of Beauvoir parents having a relatively anonymous forum for discussing the issue, and for others to consider the issue as it may relate to their own school? The instructive tone of the poster regarding the propriety of what other parents choose to say on this forum is not one that I would like to encounter at a PTA meeting, though I'm sure every school has these parents.
Also, I think that now is unfortunately the time when many of us are having to go through the process of figuring out where we might want our kids to go to school, knowing full well the difficult odds of admission. I'd been thinking that we would just apply everywhere and see where the chips fall regarding admissions, but I've heard of a number of families, including two at Beauvoir (one current family and one soon-to-be family), who feel that they would have been better off not applying to schools until all of the options were available, meaning waiting to apply until K rather than pre-K so that their children might have gotten in to a school that they thought might be a better fit that starts at K (Maret and Potomac). But, given the slim odds of getting in anywhere, and having heard that the odds are best at Beauvoir if you apply at the pre-K level (even if you need to re-apply for K) the families applied at the earliest possible point (pre-K) to increase their chances of their child being accepted anywhere, and, once accepted, felt that a bird/school in the hand is better than rejecting a school and then having to risk being shut out everywhere the following year. This is a long way of saying that I am trying to get a feel for whether we'd be happy to join Beauvoir (both the school and community) and am trying to make that decision prior to the whole application process gets underway, both formally and informally. It's pretty frustrating for everyone, I think, that the areas schools start at different entry points, so that you really can't just wait to find out where (if anywhere) you're child has been accepted, and then move on from there. While I'm looking forward to our daughter's year at preschool, I do have a bit of envy for those of you who are already through this frustrating process. |
Wow - if you are seriously trying to get a feel of schools from this crazy anonymous board - you are in big trouble! Most people that post on Beauvoir questions don't even attend the school. I wouldn't judge Beauvoir or any school by posts on DCUM. Good luck! |
| Surely there is a way for the OP to find out class list info for school from a source other than DCUM?! |
|
PP, I absolutely thought the same thing. It says a LOT about the school that Beauvoir parents have to come here for info. And it is not just class lists; I find many of there very specific questions very odd to be asking on this site. You don't really see it with other schools.
Sorry, it really does say a lot. |
| I think it says less than you imagine. There seem to be a lot of Beauvoir posters here, so a lot of 'what do you know' or what do you think' questions about Beauvoir get answers from other parents with helpful info. Sometimes you just don't want to ask someone in administration whether it's worth your time to attend the parent coffee with the head of school. |
I agree completely! Don't read into these questions negatively against Beauvoir. In fact, compared to our previous school we have had many more parents, Buddy family, Administrators, etc... offering to answer questions etc...Anytime I have asked a question at Beauvoir I have had nothing but wonderful responses and assistance. I am shy and sometimes it is easier for me to just post my questions on here anonymously as I am sure it is for others. |
