Whats with the moral outrage. This is the law in DC. OP should exercise her rights. |
If you're upset about the current law, Anita Bomds is holding a hearing at the Wilson Building on July 13 and you should plan to attend. Until the Council modifies the current law, PPs are correct that OP is in the driver's seat. |
| I don't know why anyone is upset with me for stating the obvious. Like another PP said this is the law in DC-- it is also the reason I bought in VA. I would only buy a place in DC if never planning on turning it into a rental. If you have a rental in DC and want to sell it, you probably need to move back in yourself for a year or something before selling it in order to successfully terminate all of your tenant's rights to the property. |
| NP here. Does anyone know how the tenant laws work if you are just renting a room in your own home? I'd I like to rent the basement of my home and share the living/kitchen space. I'm thinking of doing this just for extra cash but I'd really hate to be stuck with someone if I decide to stop renting it in the future. I didn't realize landlords couldn't get tenants out after a lease end, that doesn't make sense to me. |
You need to check out the rules in your jurisdiction since they vary widely. Most areas have a Tenant-Landlord office that can help point you in the right direction. You want to be clear about your rights and your tenant's rights before you do anything. |
As opposed to the landlord who's selling the property during someone's lease? How'd you like to be given 30 days to find a new place and move? Compensating tenants for their inconvenience, if they are mid-lease, isn't sick, it should be standard. |
| You don't ever have to leave, also you don't even have to pay rent and you can stay. Not kidding DC tenant laws are whack. |
It is first right of refusal to buy the home, they can delay the sale for as much as 6 months and they can sell their right of refusal to someone that could make it take even longer. DC is about to look at legislation that might change this all soon for single family or duplex owners. I have sold a house with a tenant in it and had no problem. They couldn't afford to buy and signed off on it. Unless you have swindlers as tenants you won't have any problem |
