Agree with this. When I conceived I knew the date based on my travel, and at my 8 week ultrasound it became clear conception had occurred 5 days after sex, so it does happen. Was also told by several people that that means more likely a girl. Assumed that was one of your average old wives tales, but in my case it was accurate. ![]() |
The plot thickens.
I called my OB's office this morning. After being disconnected twice and a grand total wait time of 40 minutes, I finally spoke to a patient coordinator and explained that the dates were not adding up with the 6 weeks 1 day dating I received yesterday, and that I wanted a follow up ultrasound in a week. After being placed on hold several times, the person on the other end told me that the scan showed me at 8 weeks 3 days, with a February 13 due date. This made no sense because a February 13 due date is consistent with me being 6 weeks 1 day yesterday, which is what I was told then. If I am over 8 weeks along, I am not due on February 13. I'm trying to call to figure this all out and figure out if I need to reschedule the 10 week appointment that I made based on the 6 w1d timing, but my confidence in my OB's office is plummeting. |
What?! That is crazy, OP! I love my OB in case you are thinking of switching--Brendan Burke, a solo practitioner near the Friendship Heights metro. Delivers at Sibley (or Georgetown for twins/high risk). Gives lots of personalized attention, and takes my insurance (United). Has been with me through several miscarriages and through what appears to now be a healthy pregnancy (knock wood). Good luck! |
Welp, after receiving an email message simply telling me to keep my schedule appointment for July 18 (10 weeks based on me being 6 weeks 2 days), I was very confused, called again, and was told by a different receptionist that I am 6 weeks 1 day. I told her that someone told me this morning that I am 8 weeks 3 days, and she told me I was being argumentative.
I asked that an actual doctor call me back, and now I am researching solo practitioners that take Blue Cross Blue Shield federal. Any recs would be appreciated. Still have no idea how far along I am. |
OP, that's so frustrating. I'm sorry you're going through this!
I don't know where you live, but I used the midwives at WHC and they were wonderful. If they are close to you, I'd recommend them! |
Thanks - unfortunately Dr. Burke does not take BCBS Federal, but I have an appointment with Dr. DeSouza in a couple weeks. The soonest I could get in was July 13 so I am just going to be in the dark until then. Man this is stressful. Thanks again for all of the helpful thoughts. And to Reiter Hill, thanks but no thanks. |
Russell bridges (in the building by foggy bottom Trader Joe's) takes bcbs & is beyond amazing. You never have to wait & always have the same nurse. He spends a lot of time at each appt & for any after hours questions, he calls back right away. I am on my 3rd pregnancy with him. |
PP here who loves Dr. Burke. I have heard great things about Dr. DeSouza. I have a friend who had a very bad experience with another practice and LOVES Dr. DeSouza. I think you will be in good friends. I have also heard good things about both Dr. Footers (who I think are cousins), one of whom is the backup for DeSouza. Good luck and please keep us updated! |
Oops that should say "good hands" not "good friends." |
I always got my bfps at 9 or 10dpo. 9 would be really, really faint, though. |
I think you should definitely change doctors if you feel disrespected, uncomfortable, etc. but I think you're being a little ridiculous about the timing issue. The reason last menstral cycle is used as the standard way to determine the due date is because it's nearly impossible to know when conception happened. You know when you had sex, but you can't know what happened inside your body and when. Congrats and I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months! |
I know that the last time I had sex with my husband was on May 13, so the latest possible day I could have conceived is May 18 (which would make sense with me getting a nearly non-existent line on one test and then a "no" on another test on the 27th, and then a "yes" on the 30th). If I conceived on May 18, I am 7 weeks along. My scan yesterday said I was 6 weeks 1 day, which is why I was confused and posted in the first place. Since then, thoughtful and helpful people have warned me, based on their own experiences, that the discrepancy could be a sign that the fetus is not growing the way it should and will miscarry. Based on this advice, I tried unsuccessfully to schedule a follow up sonogram next week to see how things are progressing, and was told (1) that I am 8 weeks and 3 days, then (2) that I am 6 weeks and 2 days and to just come in in four more weeks as planned, which doesn't address my concern that the fetus is measuring small. I am not trying to be defensive, I am just confused, this is all new to me, and it's hard to feel like the professionals who are supposed to be advising me are giving me conflicting information and not really listening to my concerns. I hope you're right and that I am being ridiculous. Frankly, that is a better alternative than miscarrying. |
I understand how you are feeling and I would insist on a sonogram next week if I were in your shoes. However, I don't think you should give up on getting one with your current practice. Maybe you will see Dr. DeSouza on July 13 and decide to switch to him immediately. But that is nearly 3 weeks away. What if a sonogram next week would show you are miscarrying? You wouldn't know that, and you wouldn't be in a position to choose intervention such as medication or D&C. Would you want to wait 2 more weeks before you knew that? I would call back your current practice and tell the patient coordinator that you have a medical question for the doctor you saw yesterday, you are concerned about the pregnancy, and you want a call back with that doctor as soon as possible. They should honor that. |
That's exactly where I'm at right now, waiting for a call back from the doctor. Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate it! |
It might also be worth checking with some of the other solo practitioners mentioned on this thread to see if they could get you in next week. Good luck OP! |
