Coastal vs Midwestern Dems

Coastal cities are where the economy is. That's where the jobs that matter are, where policy is made, and where people with talent will gravitate.

The middle of the country is the sump that collects the lazy, the stupid, those without ambition, and anyone else too obtuse to figure out where to be.

Democrats are the party of science, learning, education and betterment. By that definition, if you call yourself a Democrat, and subscribe to those values, you live on the coast, either in the northest, or the west coast.

If you call yourself a Dem and live in .... I dunno, someplace I'd never be caught dead in, then guess what? You're an idiot.

It's pretty simple.

Wrong, dumb, and not funny. Other than that, you're doing great, chief. Try to let go of the rage a bit.

OP I hope you have some constructive ideas for how we can breach that divide

I guarantee this is a Republican. No Dem I know thinks like this. In fact, they want to see more investment in the Midwestern cities so they can innovate and thrive.

+1

The focus that I am keenly aware of is to develop 'flyover' country so that it can be more economically feasible for people to work where they want to live & to drive economic development to rural areas. The future is not going to be in physical labor, the future is in technology. The more we can do to develop a workforce that can support that, the better off we will be.

How does that plan help people there's now? Most of my friends and family still there work in some sort of STEM field, medical or entertainment industries and aren't laborers. Most manual labor jobs left long ago.

No, I'm pretty sure this is a Democrat. They've been on a rage since they lost the election, but they've sunk to new lows in recent days.

I don't think less of Midwestern Dems and don't know any of my friends who do. It is a myth that educated people look down on the trades. Or farmers. Or sales. Being a great salesperson is a skill that can't really be taught, IMO. You are just born with it. I don't refer to it as "flyover" country either. Could it be that perhaps each set of Dems are addressing needs/wants that are regionally specific?

I agree. Based on some of the posts I have seen here, this fits. This type of person is why liberals have been given the “elitist” moniker.
But, I don’t think this thinking is in line with what MOST liberals believe. Just a few who are loud enough to give liberals a bad name.

I'm not a Dem or Republican. I'm staunchly independent. I think we need more human interaction and constructive debate. Everyone is living in their bubbles, and anyone outside the bubble is considered an enemy. Some people don't speak as eloquently as others, and people are quick to judge based on snippets of information rather than seeking to understand someone's POV. We developed mob mentalities -- tribalism. Sometimes I think we need to begin by emphasizing civics in school.

I'm trying to keep that in mind, but some of the liberals on here are so despicably hateful and arrogant that it's hard to remember (or hope) that they are the outliers.

Like this?

If the Democratic Party doesn't come up with a set of principles and policies that create opportunity for people who haven't had it, I think a third party is going to emerge.

First of all I hear a LOT about Dems supporting higher minimum wages, free college, etc. But all that is rather academic when they have no control over any branch of the federal govt. People ARE doing things in states, from Nevada to New York. Meanwhile the rule of law is under attack, so it seems pretty reasonable to focus on that. And on fighting what is being done at the federal level to go backwards - on health care, on financial regs, etc.

So, again, I am not sure of what they want, and whom they are addressing. They want Pelosi to drop focus on defending the republic and create a plan for the auto industry?

OTOH this probably sounds good in Michigan, so more power to them.

but congresspeople are going to represent their own regions interests as they always have. Congressional leadership is going to balance. A national policy will wait for 2020 in all likelihood.

God, you Dems are such whiny little martyrs. No one else is buying that Pelosi is some selfless and valiant warrior. Get a clue.

Op here -- Without bipartisanship there will continue to be an insane number of executive orders which are not laws, and which can be rescinded by a single individual -- the president. Who is going to hold the middle, and actually get this country running? A true leader would bring legislators together and do the hard work of hashing things out together.

Also PP you sound like you're willing to let go of Michigan, if you haven't already.

This.

The way I see it, landlocked states pretty much cost us the election. I have exactly zero love for red states, or Democrats that choose to live in red states. They should know better. And if they can't figure out that the blue states are where the future is, where the jobs will be, where the growth and investment will be, then they are no smarter than their dumbass trump voting next door neighbor. They all need to be written off.

We need to focus on two things - 1) voter turnout in urban areas. 2) immigration, and bringing new Democrats to America. 3) making sure voter ID laws are struck down in the courts whenever they are passed by racist thug state legislatures.

That is how we will win. Not by courting dumb people who can't figure out they should move

So, so sad. Will the coastal Dems continue to push the Midwesterners away? Anyone know of plans to bring them into the fold? I get the sense that coastal Dems think the Midwesterners are too centrist, and will ultimately be shut out like the Blue Dogs. It is as if the coastal Dems pretend the Midwesterners don't exist.

Here's one Detroit columnist's report:

http://www.freep.com/story/news/columnists/rochelle-riley/2017/06/02/mike-duggan-detroit-democratic-party/362434001/

I'm a coastal dem - it isn't that midwestern dems are too centrist - franken, sherrod brown aren't. But you have cancers like Claire McCaskill poisoning the party.

Don't make this into midwestern vs. coastal.

It's progressives vs. assholes and the assholes in fact are more on the coast if i'm being honest. Booker, Warner are horrible. Give me Franken and Brown in the trenches with me.

This is one major reason no one wants to vote for your team. So many of you are utterly insufferable.
