Yes. Year 5 vs year 1. They also got 2x the merit aid as the Basis kids with 5x as many students. |
| Right, but this is BASIS' first graduating class, just 16 kids who didn't get the full BASIS experience from 5th grade - they started in 8th. Princeton and Georgetown, I'm impressed. |
Really? Why? This list really sucks for a school that pushes so much academic busy work and extra work at an accelerated pace. This list reads no better than my TC Williams in Alexandria City - one of the lowest performing high schools in our state. So there was one kid who got Ivy acceptances. Big deal. You can find that in almost any high school in the DMV area. |
| Why is someone from Virginia paying the slightest bit of attention to a DC charter school? |
| Our child matriculated from Latin and the same incessant and somewhat mischievous dissecting of college acceptances occurred on this board. While its legitimate to question how the admissions are reported (I question this with all schools), it is purposely obtuse to be a non-Basis parent and pretend to know all the circumstances surrounding this first graduating class and to compare it to other schools in a way that is apples to oranges. There are very few students who 'hang in there' as the beginning class of a charter school, and they are all to be congratulated for their college admissions and aid packages. The Basis vision as I understand it with its AP focus is not for our family, but obviously it works well for some kids and families and will no doubt only grow stronger as the school comes into its own. I'm guessing the child who went to Princeton is a child well matched for Princeton and the children going other places are well matched academically for those places. It also sounds like there is a lot of financial support in play which may make some dreams come true. Basis is one more good high school option in a city that needs a variety of good options. Congratulations Basis! |
Thanks Latin mom. -Basis mom |
Until recently you would not find that at LATIN. |
Thanks from us too! -- Another BASIS parent |

Ivy obsessed people: There are over 37,000 high schools in the US. Not every school can send even one student to an ivy. And lets not forget money has a LOT to do with the ivy league. Tens of thousands of very bright students do not go to ivy league schools. Thousands and thousands do not even apply to them. This is getting so tiring on these threads.
I think it started as a litmus to show that schools were good - hey, how can you say the education stinks if a kid educated there went on to an ivy? But now it has become some sort of strange contest that only the schools who regularly send TONS of kids are good schools and all the rest stink. It simply isn't a true measure. Ridiculous and Sad. |
For a class of 16 kids the list is impressive. |
Not a latin or basis parent, but most of the colleges on that acceptance list are 2nd or 3rd tier. I am surprised given the academic rigor of basis. |
|
A list of acceptances doesn't really give much info. You have no idea if there are 3 students who were accepted at all the top schools while 13 were accepted at lower tier schools.
The better list would be the 16 schools where students are matriculating. If more than one student is attending the same college, list it as many times as there are students attending. |
| Please give them a chance to graduate a high school class that goes all the way through. My DD is leaving BASIS for high school but she has learned an incredible amount, including how to be organized, study skills, and tremendous confidence. These are skills I didn't have in 8th grade that I know will serve her well in college wherever she goes. Thanks to BASIS from a grateful mom. |
No school in the area releases that list. |
+1 Also $2.4M in scholarships/aid is very impressive for a class of 16 |
