My husband is an architect and I can tell you that they don't make six figures unless they are very high up in the company they work for. My husband has 15 years of experience plus some experience that most architects don't have and he is on the high end at 82,000. His title is project manager.

A part time attorney could certainly make over 100,000. I'm a lawyer for the feds so I don't make law firm money, but I know people who do.

OP here -- a very big thank you to all of you. This is a lot of food for thought for me in the coming months. The 1.5-year maternity leave option at my work -- actually it's parental leave available to fathers too -- is a long-standing benefit that's part of the union-negotiated contract I work under. Nine weeks are paid and the rest is unpaid. Few people in our Washington office ever take more than a few months, though, probably because of the high cost of living here.

15:15 -- I've got a 5-digit household, too! I grew up in a household that was plenty secure financially but not secure in any other way, so I've got different priorities. I'm giving up my "good" income of a $17000 graduate stipend (haha) to stay home with the expected babe. So right now we're living on my husband's salary of 32k! Yes, it's incredibly stressful and incredibly tight. But even in this city, if you work it right, it can be done! It just depends on where your heart lies.
