Real life examples of "If you love someone set them free..." is it true?

I didn't answer the OP's actual question: I don't personally know of any real-world examples - I don't know of any cases of 2nd attempts at a failed relationship that succeeded. I think the PP @8:45 has a nice story, but that wasn't really a relationship in the first go round - he just cooled it on what he realized was a one-sided infatuation.

This is why you tell yourself something nice like this adage so that you are capable of maintaining some external dignity (even if you're dying inside) so you don't do things that make you look back and cringe later.

I still cringe when I think about how I reacted to one dumping - a long letter, full of statements that I just want to forget - particularly now that I recognize how much of a bullet I dodged.
