Is it too late for a beach house rental this summer?

Are you implying that a majority of them are crappy.
Certain areas have crappy ones certain ones don't.

It is a simple formula of supply and demand.

Try looking in the Outer Banks for the week of August 19th. Things sometimes get cheaper at the end of August bc schools start back up.

OBX houses are ALWAYS cheaper towards the end of August. Sometimes half the price of June and July.

OBX is a good bet. I'm also kinda obsessed with this place in Delaware (on the bay, very pretty and it's nice to not worry about the big waves with the kids). You can also make an easy drive to Rehoboth for the boardwalk.

PP here. That place is a little run down but I still like it.

This house is next to the light house house, you could rent both.

Op here! Thank you all for your ideas. Glad I expanded my search to Outer Banks because there were lots more options. But you all were right; pet friendly, ocean front, pool, budget...it's too hard to get all of the checks. We decided to go cheap when we saw a place that wasn't oceanfront and didn't have a pool, but at $1500 a week I can't complain. It's in Corolla. I have no idea what the different towns are like. Please don't come tell me Corolla is terrible!

Corollla is great just plan your drive down accordingly. Are you doing a sat to sat or sun to sund rental?

Corolla is fabulous, especially with kids. You'll love it! Weve been going for 20 years. We've gotten some great deals there in August, too. The key is to wait until mid-month when rates drop and be willing to walk past a few houses to the beach. And if you skip the pool, you definitely save quite a bit.

Op here. Glad to hear Corolla is fun! Kids are 7 and under. We are doing sat-sat. Traffic is going to be horrible, I know, but I figure that comes with the territory. Any tips would be great!

Pull out of your driveway at 5am on the day you head down. Yes you'll be there early but you can an early lunch before check in.

+1

5am - seriously. Otherwise your drive could be twice as long - or more. Traffic gets brutal.

Out house is in Kitty Hawk so traffic isn't as bad and we usually go down Friday afternoon to avoid traffic. We have had friends renting in Corrola leave Friday also and get a hotel room in ObX if possible or get one in Chesapeake VA about an hour and half sans traffic from Corrolla. They leave Chesapeake around 7 go to beach in Corrola one parent goes to grocery store and then they check in.

NP here. We get luxury condos in FL, use the money saved on cheap plane tickets and end up in a way nicer unit with a much lovelier beach. Plus it feels like less of a slog than packing up the car and hitting 95S with everyone else. Plus there are only 4 of us and "small" accommodations in OBX are the crappiest of all. It's like if you onoy need 2-3 bedrooms they think you don't care if it's $hitty. No thanks.
