Should VA have more charter schools?

DC poster invading your forum, but I'd add a big DON'T DO IT. They're more fluff than substance. If one of their hucksters comes around with "data", take a good hard look at it because it's usually sleight of hand, and not meaningful improvement in the kids education.

Yes, of course. But then I'm pro-choice.

The no people can, of course, choose not to enroll.

That's not how this works. Because you're siphoning money away from my school to give you that "choice." Public schools can have all those programs or educational focuses, without becoming charters that can refuse to enroll students and that aren't held accountable to the same set of standards.

Because the Department of Education said so.

The dept. of ed is not for this either.

Why? If you chose to buy in a less expensive closer in neighborhood, others will too and your neighborhood school will improve. Removing the most motivated students from the local schools will only hurt those schools and those children.

Why do you need one? Claremont, Campbell, and Drew too diverse for you? Just apply to ATS and you can always go private if that doesn't work out. Or are you hoping they'll open a charter like Belton Academy in South Carolina that will “stress free market entrepreneurism and competition and emphasize traditional values.” I see you, neighbor.

God, no, no charter schools. Studies show they don't work, and if they are for-profit, they are likely to be god-awful. Profit and education don't mix.

Out of bounds for Claremont and it's a slim chance to get into ATS, or Campbell. We will go private and would love a voucher for that.

No Charter schools in VA

Please petition the governor then to veto these two bills SB 1283 and HB2342. They establish charter schools across regional divisions if any school is failing. Forcing children I guess in poorer neighborhoods to drive further to receive quality schools. I can't imagine how a charter would work across multiple counties as this bill requires.

FYI everyone I know who wanted to go to Clarement got in off the waitlist last summer, including those that were out of bounds. They also let you go to Key if you don't get into Claremont.

Charter schools are not the same thing as vouchers. Charters would also be on a lottery basis. With so many magnets in Arlington I don't understand why you'd want a private option as well. A voucher is a subsidy and would likely only go to those who already qualify for free and reduced lunches.

Charter schools can cherry pick their students; they don't take ELL and SPED students.
Charter schools are not held to the same standards of public school; so they hire less qualified teachers, pay them less, offer no job security and have high teacher turnover.
They take $ from public schools, so everyone suffers.
Charter Schools do not offer the variety of electives that public schools do - art, music, languages.
Charter Schools typically don't offer daily transportation.
Follow Carol Burris - head of Network for Public Education - everyday she reports on another charter school scandel that leaves kids stranded with no school and the administration embezzling or mismanaging the funds.

Virginia has some of the best public schools in the country. No to Charter Schools.
