Febreze is a carcinogen. |
| Some universities like UVA have complete dorm sets, including comforter and rug. We did that for no. 2. It was cheap and worked out very well. DD didn't have to haul anything to campus. |
|
You won't be able to do it online but we buy all of our kids' college bed linens at either Tuesday Morning or Marshall's. We usually pay no more than $29.99 for the twin XL sheets. We do two sheet sets per kid. I just don't want any kid to fuss if something happens to the sheets so I go cheap. We usually find really good thread count and SOFT sheets for that price.
In addition to the sheet sets, the kids each get one duvet cover, one down comforter, one mattress pad, two cotton blankets and three pillows. When it gets to be warm weather we have told the kids to put the cotton blankets spread out on the bed under the mattress pad so they didn't have to waste storage on blankets but the blankets are still accessible if they need them. |
Wow! Just looked it up. Who knew? Link next time for those a bit lazier than me. |
| Costco sells them in August. |
IME, the "must have" list is much smaller than advertised. We did the bare minimum and bought things later if they actually needed them- which were few and far between. I can be easy end up spending more money on too much stuff- even if they are on sale. |
| Wait till the summer when everything is on sale. If you are not local, better to buy there or have it shipped to the dorm. |
| If you're flying with DC to school, Southwest has really generous baggage allowances (total of 4 free per person -- two carry on, two checked) and they had the best policy if you have a guitar (if it fits in the overhead when you get on, it counts as one of your two carry-ones regardless of dimensions). |

I love the idea of a form headboard posted on this blog. http://theoldpostroadblog.blogspot.com/2013/06/easy-dorm-room-headboard-tutorial.html
There is nothing wrong with coordinating with a dorm-mate or buying two sheets of the same style to make the room look more coordinated, neat and spacious. |
Yeah, Mom, there is something wrong with that. |
| My child wanted the same sheets as home, so I waited for a sale at garnet hill and got the white ones with scalloped edges. A little bit of home on the bed. Fwiw, these are the only sheets I buy. |
Different poster but I don't see what is wrong with wanting a nice nest. The dorm room is a home away from home and I would want it to be nice. I know my kids certainly have put a lot of thought into how to make their dorm rooms comfortable, and I am glad to make it happen for them! But different strokes for different folks. |
My point was let the kids work it out themselves rather than start researching foam headboard tutorials or suggesting that the roommate (whom neither of you know yet) should be willing to coordinate on decor. Pushy mom in the middle is not a good way to start off a yearlong roommate relationship. |
I think you're projecting. I'm just indicating a willingness to support and bankroll my child's choice. I have in no way indicated that I'm taking the lead on the project. Happy life! |
