Reno, NV area lifestyle

Reno is basically a ghost town of old casinos from its glory days, half are now boarded up. I know very few people that would enjoy living there. I'd much rather live in Truckee or Tahoe and commute into Reno. Many people do.

Do yourself a favor and visit before moving there.

Thanks, we do plan to visit. I was told that many of the old casinos are gone in favor of newer ones located away from the main strip of downtown. However, I took that to mean torn down or re-purposed, not boarded up. One of my biggest concerns is the size of the town being rather small and the schools look pretty mediocre at best and private options are few. Do you have any idea about the private schools in the area? To your point, it looks like housing would be more int he areas you mentioned with a commute in. Appreciate the info.

Yes, most of the hotels and casinos that were built in the 50's are either closed down or have little business. A quick drive through this area will surprise you. About the only nice hotel/casino in Reno left now is the Peppermill. Blocks and blocks of the old Reno business district are closed or run down.

With Telsa opening up a huge new battery factory, there are hopes of Reno being reborn. As for housing, there are certainly many nice, newer subdivisions to pick from. Although more expensive to purchae homes, I'd much rather commute from either the Incline area of Tahoe or from Truckee. Each is about 30 minutes away but COMPLETY different in a good way.

I have two friends who live out there. One in Reno and the other somewhere else, can't remember where, but close to Reno. Both love it, both are outdoorsy people. One is a school teacher for a Title 1 school and has he kids in private, the other has her kids in public. I would suggest visiting with your kids and looking at private schools.
